Hanging coats in the downstairs loo

We’re getting a downstairs loo put in. There’s bugger all cupboard space in the house. How would you feel visiting a house where your coat was hung up 8. The downstairs loo.

@Sally872

For my parents or siblings popping in coats go on the bannister or back of a kitchen chair.

If a larger group then usually we put them upstairs on a bed then bring them down when people are leaving. Hadn't occurred to me until now that might be weird 🤔

Visitors coats always went on the bed when I was a child. At our house and every house we ever visited. Your post has brought it all back. I haven't seen that done in about 4 decades though Grin
Snoopsnoggysnog · 21/06/2021 22:43

I would think that a bit grim, sorry. We have a coat stand from IKEA in our hallway. It’s quite slimline and holds loads of coats but if you don’t overload it it doesn’t look too bad.

We have a very hot radiator in our downstairs loo so I sometimes hang uniform or PE kit in there if I need it dried quickly overnight but that’s when no one is likely to go in there.

BaronessBomburst · 21/06/2021 22:46

No.
That's grim

Pandasarecool · 21/06/2021 22:47

Wouldn’t bother me in the slightest.
I’ve made it to my mid 30s unscathed, from so called poo particles landing on my belongings.

BarkingUpTheWrongRoseBush · 21/06/2021 22:50

I did think this might bring out the extremes of mumsnet.

It’s quite a big downstairs loo, but too awkward to divide into cupboard and loo.

We do have a coat stand but it’s a pain in the hallway….but if we kept just for visitors coats would be ok. But we don’t, it’s festooned with coats and makes a pinch point to get past.

Visitors coats go on newell post bottom of stairs. Or in a bedroom on a bed if it’s a crowd. I don’t think that’s weird.

It’s actually quite a big hall but awkwardly doomed…and I have a dream in my head of it being shoe and coat clear…

But that would mean some visitors going inwardly eurgh and rushing home to wash their coats beacause of the loo…

I wouldn't be very pleased if my coat was put in a bathroom. Would something like this work? Would sort your cupboard space out beyond coats too!

NatWestPigFamily · 21/06/2021 23:18

Sorry OP, I think it’s a horrible idea. I wouldn’t make a fuss to you but I would not put the coat back on when I left and would be putting it straight in the wash particularly if it involved my kids coats. I just think it’s grim.

Honestly Hmm at some of the answers here @BarkingUpTheWrongRoseBush - I live in a rural village, have always, and honestly, every house I can think of (not all old, grand, or farmhouse type) has a cloakroom with coats, hats, dog leads, wellies, magazines, parish mag, usually some nameless bit of gardening kit and yes, a sink and loo. I can honestly say that the idea of poo particles would be met with hysterical laughter around here. And as for the idea that you might leave your toothbrush in a bathroom you used, but not in a cloakroom that non - family used... totally get that it's a case of each to his or her own, but in answer to your original question, no, I wouldn't see an issue.

Quite
Viviennemary · 21/06/2021 23:45

I wouldnt like it. A friend did this and I thought it was odd. Especially as it wasn't a small house and an alternative place for coats could havd been found.

IliveonCoffee · 22/06/2021 00:13

Is the downstairs loo under the stairs?

I don't actually care so much about the coats, but its certainly annoying to have to maneuver in a tight space, with coats billowing off the door, and tripping over shoe racks and loose shoes to get to the loo. Fighting with the bulky coats that don't want to let you close the door. Not really having enough space to stand and wrestle skinny jeans back on without having a wayward sleeve attempt to join in. Plus then, trying to wash hands without splashing said coats, and find the towel.

Great they don't look untidy in the hallway, but instead they are untidy in an even smaller room, where I'm partly undressed.

So I wouldn't really be bothered by my coat being stored there so much as bothered about having fight round them to use the loo. And if your downstairs loo is truly big enough for them...it should be able to fit a cupboard for them.

And, possibly, a shotgun too. Things were different in our day!

Everyone saying no, do you have a towel to dry your hands on in the same room that you have a toilet?

LoopTheLoops · 22/06/2021 00:51

Absolute no from me 🤢

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 22/06/2021 00:56

nope
🤮

no.

after washing hands some of us wipe their hands on our clothes because it's just water, some of us shake/drip dry, some of us get a clean cloth from under the sink.

I hate the idea of hand towels, especially when they hang right next to the loo

Same here.

Revolting.

We use small hand towels kept in a drawer under the sink. Single-use.
HangingOver · 22/06/2021 06:09

These threads are hilarious Grin

I can't believe how scared of the toilet people on MN are. Just waiting for someone to come along and insist that anything other than burn-washing your entire body and wardrobe after each bowel movement is "grim".

Ifailed · 22/06/2021 06:16

unless you have some kind of air-lock between the toilet and the rest of the house, these mysterious poo-particles are going to get everywhere.

You are probably breathing them in now, your hair and skin are covered in them as is the screen you are reading this on.

Dollywilde · 22/06/2021 06:21

The professionally disgusted are amazing! No I don’t find it weird. MIL lives in a 3 year old new build and the coats are kept in the downstairs cloakroom as that’s where the developers put some hooks. Tbh the downstairs loo doesn’t get used much anyway but I wouldn’t think twice about it!

countrygirl99 · 22/06/2021 06:23

Not only are our coats in the downstairs loo - no hallway, it's there, yhd kitchen orvyhd living room, but they hang out next to the one I shovel horse shit in.

This. Dd cleans her teeth and washes her face in the downstairs loo because it's quicker when she's come back from the horses in the morning. We also have bits of horse tack hanging in there and the dogs wander in and out. Sometimes they push the door open and come and sniff you when you are on the loo. Very annoying. Absolutely no tummy issues ever among any of us and I don't think my guests would expect anything less!
Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 22/06/2021 06:57

We did in our old house for 35 years and lived to tell the tale.
I know two different families who have a shoe rack in the downstairs loo as well and there is a lovely smell of feet!

ineedaholidaynow · 22/06/2021 07:06

What about towels in the bathroom? Do people hold their breath when they flush the loo? Do you have to wash your clothes straight after flushing the loo?
