Why does my toilet smell so much?

Bit of a gross one here….

My toilet smells, not always, but most of the time. It smells like piss to be honest but I don’t know where it’s coming from. It’s cleaned in and around thoroughly. It’s a tiled floor. I’m putting bleach or toilet cleaner down regularly. I’m not sure if it’s the water inside that smells or something around it. I have another toilet which doesn’t smell at all on a different floor. There has been a rat problem locally but no sign of them in my house although I have seen them in the garden on occasion but we have multiple traps down. It smells like a dirty public toilet. What else can I check? Could it be rat related? The smell is pretty strong and as I said, not always present.

I changed our toilet seat today and was disgusted what was underneath the fittings. Despite me rigidly cleaning. I now have an easy to remove loo seat. I never knew they were a thing but it has a quick release button 🤣

Check the cistern as it may need a clean! Also if you use a cistern block / tablet type thing I've found these can cause a public toilet type smell over time!!

When we had this it turned out to be the back of the toilet going into the rubber thingy had moved , eveytime it was flushed a miniscule amount of dirty water was seeping out around the seal

Mine smell too. Have been getting down there to smell where it’s coming from. It’s the seat. The plastic seat seems to retain the smell. Have a sniff at the front of the seat. Not sure what the answer is apart from a new seat

Than you everyone for your ideas and suggestions, I’ll go through them all and report back if I manage to get to the bottom of it!

When we moved in ours was the same seeped thro the tiles and underneath. When lifted the tiles the wood under was sopping and stank. Changed to lino as can be replaced regularly if need be. Not smelled since.

Inspired by this thread I have stuck my head properly behind the loo and discovered a) it needs to be cleaned back there thoroughly and b) the sealant around the pipe looks melted. Not very sure how it can be melted, and surely if it was actually leaking it would smell of sewage, not just wee? Will clean properly tomorrow and see what effect it has.

Do you have a toilet brush you use? I found this problem on a cruise and found the loo would stink of wee when it had been cleaned and suspect it was a rank toilet brush being used to clean the toilet. Might be worth boiling the kettle and rinsing the toilet brush in the garden (over a gravel path or you will kill the grass!) let it air dry and see when you next clean the loo with bleach if the smell goes?
