Help, I've upset someone without meaning to.

As above really, made a short joke to a family member (I'm short and they're always joking about being short) and they've taken offence. I feel awful but don't know what to do.

You talk to them and apologise for upsetting them. It's not hard.

Janaih · 20/06/2021 22:22

Apologise once sincerely then move on.

allycat4 · 20/06/2021 22:24

Say sorry and actually mean it. And don't make comments about personal appearance. Simple.

Why did they take offence OP Did you insult them or were they being a bit touchy

Apologise for hurting their feelings, and move on. If you weren’t being deliberately nasty, or singling them out, a simple and honest apology will suffice.

funnyeddie · 20/06/2021 22:50

Anordinarymum It's usually a normal joke between the two of us which is what has thrown me I think. I'm mortified, I really didn't mean any offence.

Don't apologise. They need to grow the fuck up.

JackieTheFart · 20/06/2021 23:20

Maybe it’s churlish of me, but if I normally share jokes with someone who is close to me and suddenly they take offence I’d absolutely be using the ‘I’m sorry if what I said upset you. It was a joke’.

You must have tapped into something sensitive so if they are upset put it right by saying sorry and letting them know you didn't mean anything by what you said. I bet they will tell you they are sorry too x

What was the joke? I'm short Grin

SheepGoBaaaa · 21/06/2021 00:07

Why are you confused? Why wouldn’t you just apologise?

VeniVidiWeeWee · 21/06/2021 00:17

You're going to be cancelled, fired from your job, and should you have one, your statue will be torn down.

Welcome to 2021.

Apologies for the above post; there is a comma incorrectly used.
