Is there something completely “normal” and everyday that gives you the chills for no apparent reason?

Whenever I hear the jingle from an ice cream van I get that horrible swoosh of anxiety but I just got a particularly bad one!

I was upstairs, with all the windows open, when I heard a jingle which sounded extraordinarily loud and sort of echoey. It really sent shivers down my spine and made me feel very on edge.

Is there anything relatively “everyday” which sets you off?

Balloons make me panicky. Will it pop? Will it be horrifyingly partially deflated? Will someone rub it on their hair? 😬 Gah, let's never allow them anywhere ever again.

Bagpipes. There's a man who often plays them in the city centre, and I want to snap the pipes over my knee to make him stop. I have a visceral reaction to the droning.

Sandpaper, Emery boards give me goosebumps and set my teeth on edge.
Weirdly in the last couple of years the candles on horse chestnut trees make me feel physically sick. I've tried pseudo aversion therapy and I can't explain it to myself but there we are.

Yes and yes. I used to work at a golf club where a piper practiced. I put it down to that. I can avoid balloons at home by citing environmental reasons but really I've never been able to tolerate how nervous they make me!

"Fur" in kettles! Ugh!Sad

RigaBalsam · 20/06/2021 18:05

@IHaveBrilloHair

Crowds of people clapping along with songs, it gives me awful cringes. Also, this has not happened to me yet but I've heard that sometimes people clap at the end of a film at the cinema. Noooo, I'd honestly run out.
What about when an aircraft lands and people clap?
VashtaNerada · 20/06/2021 18:07

Bare feet. Apart from showers I have socks on at all times! I shudder even seeing someone else with bare feet because I can’t help but imagine what that feels like.

loadofcrap10 · 20/06/2021 18:08

Soap dispensers in public loos that dispense soap "foam". Dont know why but it makes me wretch and I generally just rinse it off straight away without washing hands properly.
Also the relatively common phone ring tone that was on my mobile at the time my ex and I split up and he was hassling me all the time. Still makes me cringe and shudder 7 years down the line.

Susannahmoody · 20/06/2021 18:11

Strangers invading my personal space. I actually want to throttle them.

Just the thought of canals, deep water etc omfg no.

Fuckingcrustybread · 20/06/2021 18:18

Any artificial fabric, gives me electric shocks, dreadful stuff.

Mum2b43 · 20/06/2021 18:20

Wooden lolly sticks or cutlery!
Seeing someone sucking on a wooden stick or eating with a wooden spoon makes me wretch and my teeth go tense.

Prettybubblesintheair · 20/06/2021 18:21

Guinea pigs
Cotton wool and shoe laces (particularly the idea of them catching on my fingernails makes me go all goosebumpy and feel sick)
Waters in the dark (lakes, oceans etc)
Large sea creatures like sharks, Whales, dolphins.

All of the above give me this deep rooted intensely uncomfortable feeling. I also get very anxious hearing the ice cream van but I think that’s down to a childhood of never being allowed one due to my mums issues with food and then watching friends enjoying their ice cream. If we ever pass a van I always let my dc have an ice cream.

Chickpeasorchips · 20/06/2021 18:23

A load of empty metal coathangers moving around and clanging together. And just metal coathangers in general Grin

Chickpeasorchips · 20/06/2021 18:24

I completely understand the ice cream van one. The tune is creepy and reminds me of clowns

LazyDaisy22 · 20/06/2021 18:28

Buttons. Hate touching them and sometimes have to wash my hands afterwards. Boxes of old buttons are unbearable to look at, let alone touch.

I saw a thing on Twitter the other day which made me giggle "Boris Johnson looks like he brushes his hair with a balloon".

Janaih · 20/06/2021 18:28

Seeing the bottom of large ships. Titanic and poseidon are the most terrifying films ever.

Longtimeagonow46 · 20/06/2021 18:29

Another one here for empty swimming pools

Small holes in things (like crumpets)

Spiders

Finger nails tapping on surfaces

Pylons

Heights

Being next to really large things like statues. I saw some really huge horse's head statues once and couldn't go near them. It's a hard one to explain, but I also can't stand next to the high pier legs on the beach for example. I know it sounds daft. I remember at school in assembly each morning I used to dread having to sit on the seat next to the huge velvety curtain at the edge of the hall. I felt almost suffocated.

Deep, murky water.

Jack Nicholson (I don't know what it is and he's probably a lovely guy but it's something about his eyes)

Longtimeagonow46 · 20/06/2021 18:30

Also high ceilings like in a cathedral, if I look up I feel really panicky and dizzy.
I feel like a loon now reading all that back!

Pet8 · 20/06/2021 18:30

I didn't think I did but I'm nodding to a lot of these. I don't react as bad to ice cream jingles but I do think the one that comes into our cul de sac sounds sinister. Both my DGM would tell me tales about the blitz. So when I'd sometimes hear an air raid siren during a school lesson I was terrified. No idea where it came from or why. This was late 70s. Also the noise of the orange lodge instruments. I've moved to an area where they don't march now so don't feel that distant thud of drum grow louder.

However, My 2 biggest fears are indoor swimming baths and museum displays.
I hate being at swimming baths. I have a dreadful feeling as soon as I smell the chlorine, I get panicky about changing rooms and I freeze at the echoey shrieks of young children. I can't distinguish if the screaming is joy or distress. I've deprived my dc of them because of my fear. Thankfully, they're all swimmers don't carry this anxiety.
I absolutely love history. Love the idea of museums. But once inside, especially when I know the layout, I become quite scared. Unfortunately, I have passed this onto one of my adult dc! I think I see the mannequins or stuffed birds and animals move. I have had recurring nightmares since I was little (so almost half a century) of being trapped inside our biggest local museum. When the film night at the museum came out, I was physically sick. Didn't help that the dc all watched the dvd over again. I'm scared to turn corners because I know I'll be shocked by dummies or a display cabinet of military uniform; national costume or mummied coffin. We have a huge, newish social/ local history museum in my hometown. It's my favourite subject ever but I've embarrassingly only been inside a couple of times because it scares me. I've actually pushed my dc in front of me visiting York castle museum Blush

Longtimeagonow46 · 20/06/2021 18:32

Putin gives me the heebie jeebies too.
Also having cannulas put into my hand (ugh). Fine with blood tests and injections.

Can definitely see what you mean regarding the ice cream van chime

MilduraS · 20/06/2021 18:33

Cotton wool. If I touch it I get a shiver up my spine and feel a bit ill.

Stairs with no handrails. I get a bit panicky at not having something to hold on to.

showerbeer · 20/06/2021 18:34

I’m scared of hand dryers in public toilets Blush too loud!

showerbeer · 20/06/2021 18:35

Also the existence of my own veins 🤢 if I think about the veins in my arms and neck I go a bit funny.

EssexLioness · 20/06/2021 18:35

Quite a few! Spacer earrings make me feel really nauseous. Old style markets where all the stall holders are shouting to get your attention… shouting in general gives me major anxiety. Also any sort of drain/ grate (blame the film It for that one)! I have to turn my head away cos I’m too scared to look inside incase someone’s watching me 😆 clowns scare me too. And I cannot sit in the dark with the curtains open cos I have a fear of looking up and seeing someone’s face peering in (watched far too many horror movies in my time)
And driving over big bridges, especially suspension bridges, something about the wires themselves towering over me. For some reason I’m fairly ok if someone else is driving but if im driving they terrify me. There’s one called the QE2 bridge not that far from me and i genuinely feel shaken and anxious every time. I clutch the steering wheel so tightly my knuckles go white!

Tangledtresses · 20/06/2021 18:36

I think the sirens in the late 70's was a flood warning? We were in London bear Hammersmith and had a lot of flood warnings then...
