Is there something completely “normal” and everyday that gives you the chills for no apparent reason?

Whenever I hear the jingle from an ice cream van I get that horrible swoosh of anxiety but I just got a particularly bad one!

I was upstairs, with all the windows open, when I heard a jingle which sounded extraordinarily loud and sort of echoey. It really sent shivers down my spine and made me feel very on edge.

Is there anything relatively “everyday” which sets you off?

Wet wool.
DD hates polystyrene.

Gorkastalker · 20/06/2021 16:55

I can't stand electricity pylons, they proper freak me out. I even plan my running routes so i don't have to go past too many.

Cows also give me the heebie jeebies.

LittleMissPeggySue · 20/06/2021 16:57

Plastic boxes for storing food. I don't know why, I think it's the fact that they retain the smell of the food or go orange if you wash them with something that had tomato in but I despise them. My DP thinks it's hilarious that I'm scared of Tupperware but they really do make my skin crawl.

@countdowntonap

The Rag an Bone/scratch metal man
Same I remember running home as a child I was so terrified. Motorbikes too

Parquet flooring makes me sick and disgusted.

loveliesbleeding1 · 20/06/2021 17:02

Salads with frilly lettuce leaves and tomatoes in a big bowl with no dressing. It makes me shiver.

CatFacePoodle · 20/06/2021 17:04

Damp tea towels.
Wet dishcloths hanging over a tap.
People cutting things with kitchen scissors.

LittleMissPeggySue · 20/06/2021 17:06

Also hate if I have to walk right next to a bus or coach. Or lorry, anything that isn't a car or small van really. I have no idea why but the thought of being near the noisy engines freak me out, I'm scared somehow I'll fall underneath.

Also air brakes on buses. Can't stand them, they make me jump.

Mankini · 20/06/2021 17:08

Air raid sirens make me feel panicky, though perhaps because I grew up on an airbase and they never meant anyting good (plane crash etc).

Also the smell of a certain type of wet paint that smells a bit like synthetic lemon sweets. Stays up my nose and makes me feel sick all day.

Wooden sticks, like lollipop sticks or wooden forks, cant touch them or bear to see anyone using one

Holes. Certain clusters of holes make me feel that horrible skin crawling feeling. It’s okay if they’re all organised but if it’s a random cluster (like those wooden bug homes, or on a Ryvita) I can’t stomach it

Allbymyself1 · 20/06/2021 17:10

Similar to bringincrazyback,
mine was the chimes of Big Ben on the 10 o'clock news.
I'm not sure whether it was a rule of my parents or self-induced but I'd always be in a mad panic to have the TV off and be in bed before the first strike. As soon as I heard the opening music my heart would race and stayed with me as an adult. Yet I live next to a church and have never had the same feeling when that clock strikes the hour - it's only with the 10 o'clock news!

Trypophobia ! Me too.
Kljnmw3459 · 20/06/2021 17:12

Putting dinner plates in the cupboard where they are stored. Just gives me the shivers everytime.

Firefretted · 20/06/2021 17:12

Shower scrapers, especially black ones, are really sinister. I see them and for some reason always think of pterodactyls

Comedycook · 20/06/2021 17:13

Multi storey car parks....as a child I would scream hysterically when my parents parked in one

FKATondelayo · 20/06/2021 17:13

People putting on hand cream in public.
Grim AF.

MaBroon21 · 20/06/2021 17:14

Even in the middle of the day, these places seem soulless, inhospitable and bleak

They make me feel so lonely I could cry. I manage not to though.

AColdDuncanGoodhew · 20/06/2021 17:16

Ooh I cant even say trypophobia cos then all I see in my mind are those google images!

I never used to have this, it only reared its ugly head when I was browsing some bags and seen one with an “ostrich skin” design and bang! Utter disgust.

Wahhhh it’s happening now, the horrible crawling feeling Sad

Spied · 20/06/2021 17:16

Cheap bic-style razors. I get a shiver down my spine thinking of seeing one.
Seeing someone eating a home-made sandwich. Urgh.

Dontate · 20/06/2021 17:17

@AColdDuncanGoodhew if you ever come to my house, and lift the sitting room floorboards up, you’ll be horrified!

My late dh had a strict fluid limit, so to get around that he ate ice lollies like they were going out of fashion. In our sitting room, someone who lived here previously had cut out a section of the floorboards to access the cavity space below (I used to hide the dc’s Xmas presents down there when they were small - was a fab hiding place!). Dh used to post all his lolly sticks down there - there are literally thousands of them down there!

@ReachedTheEndofCake

Going over bridges with water underneath 🤢

Oh, and bread going soggy from salad in a sandwich, it makes my brain squeak.

Ooh yes both these for me. Ugghhhhh
LobotomisedIceSkatingFan · 20/06/2021 17:19

@countdowntonap

Pylons in an empty field
Yes.
FKATondelayo · 20/06/2021 17:21

Driving at night with family / friends and we're listening to music and laughing. I'm enjoying myself and then suddenly I get the fear because of the millions of films and TV shows where a happy carload of cheerful people have a horrific accident.

Also lay-bys/footbridges/paths next to busy roads. They just remind me of murder.

SirVixofVixHall · 20/06/2021 17:21

Overly dry things, like touching cotton wool , or teeth on a lolly stick.

ipswichwitch · 20/06/2021 17:27

Bagpipes, and Auld Lang Syne. Both make me want to simultaneously cry and punch someone. I’m a riot on New Years Eve 🙄
