Is there something completely “normal” and everyday that gives you the chills for no apparent reason?

Whenever I hear the jingle from an ice cream van I get that horrible swoosh of anxiety but I just got a particularly bad one!

I was upstairs, with all the windows open, when I heard a jingle which sounded extraordinarily loud and sort of echoey. It really sent shivers down my spine and made me feel very on edge.

Is there anything relatively “everyday” which sets you off?

I've said it before but I really cannot stand people sticking their tongues out in photos. Social media seems to be an endless list of people thinking it's cute or cheeky to poke out their tongues for the camera. I can seem to ever 'unsee it' and it makes me uncomfortable

@3ormorecharacters

Not sure how to describe it exactly but things in deep, dark water. Like when snorkelling off a jetty on holiday, there were these huge chains coming off the jetty which disappeared into the deep and made clanking noises, and they proper shit me up.

Maybe it has something to do with when I was little our local swimming pool had a wave machine in the deep end. You couldn't see it, just a big dark hole with bars across it. That had a similar effect on me. I was convinced that a shark lived in there. I've since found out that a lot of people independently had the same fear.

Wave pools creep me out too. The dark depths which you can’t swim near.. How people can swim around the roped off area where’s its deepest is beyond me, like literally waiting for death. The sound of when it starts feels ominous and that shifting of the water 🤢🙉
@3ormorecharacters i think my anchor fear is the same as your sea chains fear. It's anything that has been under the sea, coming out of the sea. It makes me shudder to think of the dark cold sea where its been
Uggh yes.
I am another person who hates the hull of large ships out of the water. Even typing that makes me shudder. Piers with the gaps through the planking...rope bridges, even in photographs. Deep, dark swirling water.
I am not keen on canyons either.
None of these really class as “everyday” things though.

Photos of pulled pork set my teeth on edge

TheChosenTwo · 21/06/2021 15:09

Packed lunch boxes although there is good reason for this - they smell of sweaty clammy food Grin

vampirethriller · 21/06/2021 15:19

Photos of people pulling faces make me feel uncomfortable. I think it was Tate and Lyle who had ads with people eating cake and I couldn't look at them.

@countdowntonap

Pylons yes...I'm sure it dates back to those terrifying information films on tv when we were young

Ironmanrocks · 21/06/2021 15:36

Drinking from a polystyrene cup - it makes my teeth go funny from the static.

When I was small, I used to scream if we walked under a railway bridge - the thought of the train going over it while I was underneath, terrified me. I still don't like them and walk quickly!

Second hand breath - I know all air is technically second hand, but I cannot STAND anyone breathing near my face (Even my poor husband!)

I don't like walking near to pylons either - especially under the cables. I run. Pylons look like giants strung together - any moment they are going to start walking...

Feet, especially manky feet. Yellow toenails make me vomit...

MostIneptThatEverStepped · 21/06/2021 15:45

Can't stand the feeling of someone touching the back of my chair or seat: special hate for back of plane, train or cinema seats when I'm not related to the person touching it and I have to seethe in silent rage.

I have managed to give myself horrible chills using cotton buds, when they squeak a bit -shuddering just thinking of it.

Same with polystyrene packaging-ugh!!!

YY to this Shock In fact, my teeth went funny and I got that horrible sensation down my back just reading that. What is it with polystyrene cups?? Confused

AutistGoth · 21/06/2021 15:54

I don't like piers, either. Walking out over the sea and being able to see the sheer drop between the planks. I'm sure the gaps widen under my weight.

I don't like staircases without risers - the vertical piece between each step - either. I remember my dad once joking with me that the builders of the staircase always said to themselves: "We'll leave these gaps here so AutistGoth can fall down them!" It was a joke, but urrrghh!! [Shudders]

Musical jewellery boxes. You know the ones where you open them and the ballerina starts twirling in front of the little mirror on the inside of the lid. It's usually playing something from The Nutcracker, I think, but I just find the 'plink plinky' noise it makes really creepy!

mamaatthegym · 21/06/2021 17:56

Yes to the aeroplane flush - I hate it! It’s so loud and aggressive and I think it’s going to suck me down with it.

I hate bin day and dread the sound of the truck coming down the road, closer and closer to my bins…then hearing all the glass and rubbish being tipped in. I think it makes me think I’ve accidentally put something in the bin I shouldn’t have and once they take it, it’s gone forever!

StCharlotte · 21/06/2021 19:04

Tea leaves.

Can't get much more every day than that.

permanentlyexhaustedpigeon · 21/06/2021 19:18

Automatic doors, especially on trains - I can't go through them without getting a feeling of being trapped.

Beeping. The washing machine, the dryer, the vehicle that is turning left or reversing, the answering machine, the lift, honking horns... any beeping drives me to distraction very quickly.

I also get extremely anxious about being late - by which I mean by a couple of seconds. I can't abide the thought of people having to wait for me.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 21/06/2021 19:47

Ice...freezers.. people biting into ice lollies..gahhhh!!!

MotherofPearl · 21/06/2021 19:55

Harbours
Dry docks
The underneath of boats and ships

I have no idea why, but all of these things give me the absolute creeps and a feeling of total dread. Very odd.

JackieTheFart · 21/06/2021 20:11

I’ve got to be honest, I don’t think I understand the question Confused

There are things I don’t like for sure, but nothing unusual that creeps me out.

MozzchopsThirty · 21/06/2021 20:17

Hair! I can't stand it if there's one on my arm or the worst is round your fingers in the bath
If it's a dark hair I will actually scream and someone will have to remove it

Also those big massive wind turbines, I have visions of one of those things flying off and spearing me through the chest as I'm driving

AmIDoingThisRight · 21/06/2021 20:57

Ships in dry docks.
Large propellors that aren't moving. No problem if they are moving though.
The feeling of standing in wet sand on the shore and sinking slowly, slowly into the water.

People doing the Vulcan hand thing - I can't even - bleurgh ...
Saying goodbye to somebody and then seeing them a couple of minutes later - the horror! Like in a supermarket, then you keep bumping into them.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 21/06/2021 21:20

The moon when it's yellow, huge and low in the sky. I can't look at itBlush

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 21/06/2021 21:21

And another one - dry socket. The thought of even looking at a cavity where a tooth used to be makes me feel faint.

sueelleker · 21/06/2021 23:07

Until I read this, I'd forgotten that I used to hate seaweed wrapping itself round my legs in the sea!
Jackieoscottagecheese · 21/06/2021 23:25

Toothpaste, especially too much, and how it foams up in the mouth

BeckyWithTheGoodHair5629456 · 21/06/2021 23:46

Going through the dartford tunnel. In my head I know that the tunnel goes under the riverbed but I'm always terrified the water will come rushing in and we'll all drown. I have visions of it happening the whole drive through 😩
Weirdly never had that feeling in the Blackwall tunnel.
