Is there something completely “normal” and everyday that gives you the chills for no apparent reason?

Whenever I hear the jingle from an ice cream van I get that horrible swoosh of anxiety but I just got a particularly bad one!

I was upstairs, with all the windows open, when I heard a jingle which sounded extraordinarily loud and sort of echoey. It really sent shivers down my spine and made me feel very on edge.

Is there anything relatively “everyday” which sets you off?

Post offices really freak me out and I have no idea why. In my first job as an office junior, they frequently asked me to go to the post office around the corner to send items recorded delivery and it would utterly panic me. Luckily I became good friends with one of the other girls and she'd do it for me at lunch time or make out that she needed to go to the post office herself for some reason or other. I realise it's completely daft and I'm not quite as bad now, but I still avoid it unless absolutely necessary.

Another thing that really creeps me out is Google earth. When you're zoomed in on satellite view looking at land and then accidentally scroll too far and end up looking at a vast expanse of ocean. It really gives me the heebie jeebies, my heart starts pounding and I feel like bit sick until I scroll back to land again. It's so stupid!

Seeing anyone who has a minor cut that bleeds, and they suck/lick their own blood off.....worse if they do a sort of kissing sound at the end of the deed

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 20/06/2021 23:50

Empty swimming pools.

Empty of water or people or both

noblegreenk · 20/06/2021 23:50

@HappyTimeTunnelDinosaur

The name Hannah.

The underside of boats.

Hands on jeans.

I hate the underside of boats too. I'd never set foot on a large cruise ship because I'd never relax thinking about the underside of the boat.
TheCatsBlanket · 20/06/2021 23:53

Another blood related one, even though I've never had one, the thought of having a nosebleed fills me with dread or if someone tells you about how much blood they lost during a nosebleed "the towel was soaked" etc. Actually, I need to stop thinking /typing the word nosebleed as it's making me feel sick

neroforte · 21/06/2021 00:02

Mushrooms
Being in the sea and not feeling the floor under my feet and imagining things swimming under me and grabbing me/touching me/pulling me under
The underside of boats

IHaveBrilloHair · 21/06/2021 00:04

Toilet humour.
Its just not funny.

neroforte · 21/06/2021 00:06

Also bugs.
Not the bugs as an actual being but their legs.
I did animal management at college and we had to pick up the crickets/grass hoppers by their legs and I just couldn’t do it.

Giggorata · 21/06/2021 00:26

Having sticky hands
Kirk Douglas, hated him, couldn't even look at him.
Yes to lolly sticks and chip forks
The feel of cardboard coffee cups
Someone blowing raspberries

IHaveBrilloHair · 21/06/2021 00:47

Oh yes, I don't eat things like wings or ribs because I hate sticky hands and sticky mouth.

Thewiseoneincognito · 21/06/2021 02:02

Empty swimming pools / Underneath piers, basically anything that should have water but doesn’t

Sand sticking to sunscreen

Watching people brush their teeth 🤢

@OhToBeASeahorse

The theme tune to Heartbeat or Where the Heart Is. I'm suddenly 10 again and its school the next day and I'm so so anxious and so so sad.

I was always fine once I was there.

Oh yes! For me especially the 'end of part 1' music on Heartbeat. Shudder
custardbear · 21/06/2021 03:02

I'm another clusters of holes phobic - used to make me anxious and panicky just thinking about them

Anordinarymum · 21/06/2021 03:12

Seeds inside melons and butternut squash make me shudder. i can'r eat watermelon for this reason. It creeps me out.

cakebythepound1234 · 21/06/2021 03:25

Velvet - just typing that makes me feel on edge! Don't get me started on stroking it backwards too, that makes me even more distressed. Once I had a dream that I had a giant slice of cake and when I bit into it it was actually just a wedge of velvet - makes me teeth itch thinking about it even now, 20 years later.

lemonyfox · 21/06/2021 03:54

Not me, but I used to work with someone who was terrified of putting beans near eggs. The weird thing was she actually worked in a canteen, and she used to get so angry when people asked her to put their beans and eggs next to each other. She actually used to give people their beans in a different container.

Blueberry40 · 21/06/2021 06:31

Having wet feet anywhere other than in water…can’t stand it, making me feel so uncomfortable just thinking about it Confused

Chocolatebuttercream · 21/06/2021 07:10

@3ormorecharacters i think my anchor fear is the same as your sea chains fear. It's anything that has been under the sea, coming out of the sea. It makes me shudder to think of the dark cold sea where its been

fluffythedragonslayer · 21/06/2021 07:44

Flip flops with long skirts. It annoys me on myself as I think the skirt is gonna get under my heel. It makes me feel funny seeing it on other people, I can't help but fixate on how close the hem of the skirt is to the flip-flop. Ugh ugh ugh.

Moths. Can't stand them. I went to a museum once which had a fat dead one on display and the fat body of it made me feel so ill. I'm feeling stressed writing about it. It was in a sort of thoroughfare of the museum so I had to walk past it a couple of times so I had to do it with my eyes closed. I could FEEL it even with my eyes shut. Ugh I feel all shivery and horrible remembering.

3ormorecharacters · 21/06/2021 08:21

@Chocolatebuttercream yes I think it's probably also related to the 'underside of boats' thing which a few people have mentioned, which also unsettles me.

My Mum couldn't stand velvet or velour either.
toffeebutterpopcorn · 21/06/2021 08:44

I don’t like Velcro - just because it catches and kills everything else and is a pain when kids get it matter with fluff, sand, glitter...

toffeebutterpopcorn · 21/06/2021 08:44

*matted

brogo · 21/06/2021 08:53

Flushing the loo on an aeroplane is absolutely terrifying! It starts of so quietly and then that awful loud sucking noise. I hate flying so that probably doesn't help.
I'm quite dramatic so I usually go into the plane toilet and stare into the mirror like it's my final moments just before the plane goes down.
