She loves Holly Smale - just finished all the geek girl and valentines series. Anything sci fi/ dystopia doesn't work - didn't like hunger games / divergent/ Harry Potter etc. Tried Philip Pullman but didn't quite gel - read it but not enthusiastically. Doesn't have to be particularly edifying - just something fun and keeping her reading.

My daughter loved The Kelpies series, book 1 is the Nowhere Emporium
She also loved Cogheart, The Girl of ink and stars, Brightstorm and The House with Chicken legs.

A Pinch of Magic trilogy
The Twins as St Claire's (from my own childhood!)

Adventure Island series by Helen Moss are great. Similar feel to Secret Seven etc but modern & not sexist/racist.

Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan, based around greek mythology.

Pegasus series by Kate O'Hearn, again based around greek mythology.

My dd is ten and loves Jacqueline Wilson books

Hosum · 20/06/2021 12:03

Thank you - Jacqueline Wilson we have exhausted but she did love them.
Pinch of magic she read but didn't really like - loved coghrart and house with chicken legs speak to bears. I'll try the adventure series - Percy Jackson she thinks is a little too 'young' her not me!

Kelpies series looks like one to try - Malory towers/st Claire's reread until falling apart she loves those. Basically she is an at age to want to read about girl and friendship relationships rather than 'adventure' but also hated Judy
Blume which is all I remember from that age!

My DD is 11. She isn't a massive reader but has enjoyed a number of books recently. She is currently reading The girl of ink and stars. Just finished The girl who drank the moon and really enjoyed When Hitler stole pink rabbit which she read when learning about ww2 at school.

She also likes the older more traditional books. Is part way through Tom's Midnight Garden and we have recently bought her Anne of Grren Gables and 5 children and It.

My 10 year old boy also loves reading and (and also says Percy Jackson is now too young for him!), is currently devouring the Andrew Lane Young Sherlock Holmes series, he also loved a series called Lockheart and Co about a kind of supernatural detective agency. Also The Reckless Afterlife of Harriet Stoker he enjoyed. He also really loved the Demon Road trilogy.

Percy Jackson very popular with the 11 year olds in DDs class.
School for good and evil. The murder most ladylike series.
