Melatonin?

user8984277 · 19/06/2021 22:27

Does anyone here buy melatonin and if so, where from?

I'm autistic and have had trouble sleeping for years and I'm really keen to try it.

If your in the uk you need to speak to your gp. My daughter is also autistic and has it prescribed from our gp.

mrsbyers · 19/06/2021 22:33

I bought some in the US , it made me very sick as I have crohns and ended up with kidney failure - just a heads up incase you have any gastro issues

Ostryga · 19/06/2021 22:34

My GP says the mental health service need to prescribe it but they keep refusing to offer me an appointment.

I already take several things to sleep.

How many mg do you take? (Those who take it)

SD1978 · 19/06/2021 22:39

I use iherb- but I'm based in Australia. Most people start off with about 2mg. I'm currently on a lot more than that, but it's been a few years of trial and error. Average is 2-3mg. It's not a sleeping tablet, and won't make you sleep, so if that's the issue, won't be much use.

PleaseReferToMeAsBritneySpears · 19/06/2021 22:51

Biovea. Comes from the US so takes a few days. I've not found a UK source.

My dad a neurological condition that interferes with his sleep. Tried all the usual things from the GP and when we ran out of options, she suggested this. His dose has gradually crept up, but GP and neurologist know about it and they're happy.

You probably want to start on 3mg or 5mg.

mybrainhertz · 19/06/2021 23:02

I got mine via ebay. I take 3mg if I'm struggling to get to sleep or if my sleep schedule has gone to pot.

Tesco stress tablets are also very good, their sleep tablets are the same ingredients so you can use either.

Isn’t that the whole point, that it does make you go to sleep?

Ostryga · 19/06/2021 23:30

Melatonin absolutely does make you sleep, that’s why it’s used! It’s just not a ‘sleep tablet’ as in won’t knock you out.

I have horrific insomnia but my god it works.

Op I take 10mg atm. Started at 5 and worked my way up. Only take it when I really need it. Works a charm.

SpaceRaiders · 19/06/2021 23:39

I usually stock up on it from Wholefoods when I’m in the US.

We’ve got a few tablets 1mg kids tablets left that are will tide us over before a friend manages to get us some more for us in late September. Normally I take 5mg as and when I need it which helps massively. I’ve never understood why it can’t be purchased over the counter over here.

ThePontiacBandit · 19/06/2021 23:39

It’s illegal to sell melatonin in the UK. It’s legal to buy it. That’s why you won’t find a UK distributor! I was told GPS can’t prescribe it (asked about DD who had difficulty settling). It’s not a sleeping tablet that knocks you out but it helps you relax and get you sleepy (this effect wears off) so you need to take it about an hour before bed. I’ve bought it in liquid from a Spanish pharmacy and imported it but you can get gummies off Amazon that work in a similar way. DH likes these Bedtime Gummies x 60 | 100mg | Griffonia Extract | Maintain Wellbeing | Vegan | Gluten-Free | Chewable Sleep Supplement | Passion Fruit Flavour | [[https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07RZ8J7BX/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_4W9SVY9NXWYGCGTWMWNB?psc=1&_encoding=UTF8&tag=mumsnetforu03-21 here]]

Bythemillpond · 19/06/2021 23:41

I used to get mine from the US as Dh was always over there with work but ran out earlier this year. Asked on here and was recommended Piping Rock

I take the 10mg fast acting ones (the most you can be prescribed here is 2mg of slow acting melatonin but that little doesn’t do a thing)

I have terrible insomnia and it does knock me out. I usually get about 4-5 hours sleep, sometimes a bit more.
Without melatonin I was having anything from 1.5 to 3 hours and struggling to get to sleep.

SpaceRaiders · 19/06/2021 23:44

@D0D0 Thanks for that link. I’ve just found the brand that I normally buy for me and dc. Roughly how long did it take to arrive?

Maggiesfarm · 20/06/2021 01:35

Just google. I've been buying it online for ages (though why, I do not know, it has no effect on me; I think I keep hoping it will suddenly start working).

I currently have 'Now' Melatonin 3mg and take two. Then a few hours later take another two. Then I give up. I previously tried other brands.

EmeraldShamrock · 20/06/2021 01:38

I had it prescribed by a psychiatrist for DS.
Lullaby milk contains melatonin.

EmeraldShamrock · 20/06/2021 01:41

Try turning the light to the blue or night screen apparently the light from screens disrupts natural melatonin.

SD1978 · 20/06/2021 04:01

@4PawsGood -it increases the melatonin in your brain, so you'll get a deeper sleep faster- you have to fall asleep yourself, if that makes sense, then it increases the length of REM or deep sleep you'll have. So a 5 hour sleep will feel longer as it starts the deep sleep part faster

I've wanted to get DH some for years but have always worried about getting a safe "proper" one. To people who buy it over the counter, do you mention it to your GP or just treat it like another vitamin?
