How much notice does landlord have to give?

Our landlord wants to sell and we have been told by text message that they are not renewing our current contract. Does this mean when the contract ends we have to leave or do they have to give us notice one writing once the contract ends so we’d have another 6 months as the COVID rules stand at the minute?!

Since 1st June Landlords have to give 4 months notice if they want to end your tenancy. So if the contract is due to end on 19th October they would need to inform you today that it wouldn’t be renewed.
It will need to be on a form6a Section 21 notice and they must have a valid gas safety certificate in place. They must also give you, or have previously given you, a How to Rent booklet, a copy of the Energy Performance Certificate and proof that your deposit is in a protection scheme.

Without all of that any notice would be invalid.
