Greenhouse thief

Help! DH grows strawberries in the greenhouse to stop mice from eating them, yesterday morning all the ripe ones were gone and unrepentant ones were on the floor, at lunchtime we saw a squirrel go in the open window and onto the strawberries, he was made to leave in a hurry. This morning he was waiting outside the fence for the window to open.
Any advice on how to stop this?

Netting over the strawberries should do it. You can use bamboo canes (or anything really) to create a frame so the netting is raised off the plants, but which stops the squirrel and birds etc from reaching the fruit.

Make him his own little picnic box. 🐿️
Don't forget to include some yummy strawberries🍓🍓🍓

Squirrels are just shitty rats with good PR.
They even dig up my alliums.
Fuckers don't like onions.
And where are they getting all the peanuts to bury?

We spend a fortune feeding the very fat squirrels. Make a mesh door to protect your crops.

Going to hang netting across the inside roof of the greenhouse and the door, I will report back……now to stop DH projecting about the fate of the raspberries!

My dad had a net tunnel for the raspberries.

Could you put mesh over the open windows so it cant get in?

Tinabn · 26/06/2021 23:35

Update:
One week on the greenhouse is secured. Mesh across all windows, door almost closed, BUT the main reason the strawberries are safe is the humane trap DH bought. It has a nice porcelain olive bowl filled with strawberries and peanuts and we have relocated 3 squirrels this week to areas with more woodland and away from the road …..and over five miles away from the greenhouse!

But what if they're parents of little baby squirrels?

Tinabn · 27/06/2021 07:03

The baby squirrels have grown and were the main thieves. We have a small wood at the back of our house and a road and river at the front so the squirrels had a rising population and finite resources. Several years ago we had a neighbour who shot them but since he died they’ve got more numerous and scrawnier, we had four scrapping on one tree in the spring so, as they wouldn’t enter the clergy or join the army, they had to leave for the colonies!
