Admiral Black Box car insurance - any experience?

Just after some advice about whether this would be OK for dd. It will save me £300 a year!

She does fairly low mileage, she seems a sensible driver when I'm out with her. Only issue is that she does come back home from a friends house quite late at night sometimes, short journey of 6 miles. But maybe about 2-3x a week. Their bumph says driving after 10pm is allowed but may reduce your "good driver" score.

Does this mean they can put the insurance up mid year?

I had it for my first year driving (I was old when I passed my test). It was absolutely fine, Every month I got an email saying I'd scored maximum for being a safe driver so was elligible for a discount (which turned out to be something nominal like £5). I do know a teenager who got completely thrown off his insurance because he was driving dangerously (I think it's to do with hpw hard you accelerate and break - I'm definitely not a perfect driver though so they can't be too fussy).

Just go with someone who has no penalty for late night driving!

Dd has the direct line one. It does seem to penalise her for driving in the dark (commuting back from work in the winter, for example) but she scores full marks on everything else so she is still on the highest level.

I thought all new drivers had black boxes nowadays unless money is no object.

You need to carefully the check the small print of the policy as I know from talking to friends that they aren't all the same.

I don't know anyone who has had the insurance cancelled but I do know some who have had penalties. Obviously I'm not saying it doesn't happen, I don't know every black box drover

Mine didn't. For the very reason OP has posted. The issue of night driving. She went to direct line who offered £1200 without a BB and £970 with. She chose without. Money was absolutely an object but she chose what she considered the best policy for her. Sometimes cheap isn't best.

I know there's no one rule for everyone but my DC and those of friends had no trouble with night driving. I live semi rurally and pretty much all the teens have to drive to part time jobs in hospitality or 24 hour supermarkets.

I know this was an issue for at least 2 of my DCs friends who had night shift covid jobs in warehouses, I don't remember the name of the insurer but it's one that specialises in new drivers,

I’ve just got one from admiral and it’s a scam. Score was very low, and didn’t add up based on what they told me. I asked for the raw data and the box is basically making up journeys I didn’t make. Like leaving the house at 2am on a bank holiday Monday, for 4 hours, but only travelling 50 metres!

there are several entries like that, which brings my score down because they say I’m “in the car driving too many hours each day”.

as it’s admiral, they don’t have anyone with half a brain to figure out that the data is wrong. so they simply say the data is always correct. So you’re score is correct”

I’ve had a black box with other companies in the past abd it was great. Reported my driving score very highly, abd I got extra money back after 3 months. But there’s clearly some ‘housery going on with Admiral’s system.
