Sophie Conran bowls wtf

Am I getting something wrong? I have had the full dinner service for years, we use it everyday. But the bowls chip so easily I don’t even notice it happening. I imagine it’s because of the ‘free form’ shape. How should I be storing them I’m getting so pissed off, everything else still looks great but I’ve had to replace so many bowls.

Do you hand wash or use the dishwasher? Maybe try storing them with something inbetween them like napkins or something? It might help stop the chipping if they're not actually touching each other? Sounds like hard work to me though. Are you using this set as your main dinnerware or for special occasions?

Cocoabutterkim · 18/06/2021 11:42

We use it as our main dinnerware, I dishwasher everything! I think it’s because they don’t really stack properly because of the shape. I was thinking about getting some contrasting crockery so I can replace the bowls but can’t find anything I like enough that works with the rest of the Conran stuff

Maybe there is some imaginative bowl storage system?

Good luck with the storage system! Smile

Is this the portmerion set? I have a few large bowls serving size etc and only hand wash and store carefully. We have three kids so daily use not happening here! They are very pretty but not practical! I wonder whether you need to take the bowls out of everyday use as I doubt the dishwasher is helping and not practical to hand wash those separately every day when everything else is in the dishwasher!

ATowelAndAPotato · 18/06/2021 12:34

Re the storage, not the most attractive. But you can pick up packs of cheap flannels easily enough and they are usually big enough to sit between the bowls for cushioning?

Wellwhatalovelyday · 18/06/2021 12:44

Yes! Me too! Nearly all of mine are chipped. I’ve bought some of a newer shape though - less free form - these seem to hold up better!

We've got this as well. The bowls we have are the steep sided ones, called cereal bowls, rather than the shallower sided pasta bowls. Not sure which ones you have.

We store them inside each other. They get put through the dishwasher.
We've never had any problems.

Cocoabutterkim · 18/06/2021 13:17

@Wellwhatalovelyday please can you add a link to the newer shape?
I’m giving it one more go!
@ATowelAndAPotato I prefer to not save anything for best. I don’t mind giving up on the bowls and replacing with something else, but I’ve struggled to find anything that works with the portmeirion set and I don’t want to change it all.

@L0bstersLass yes we have the cereal bowls, but ours are a mess! Just binned most of them and have 2 left 😩

Oh no! How frustrating.

I've just been to double check mine, and fortunately they are fine. You watch, I'll start chipping them now that I'm aware of the issue!

Cocoabutterkim · 19/06/2021 08:38

Thanks for the link! I’m ordering them now, fingers crossed we have more luck with these
