Gravitrax has the "building" aspect of lego and is very good for that age.

Paint by numbers has some similarities.

I'm not sure if tie-dye sets are similar, but my 8yo really enjoyed this craft.

Loom bands are pretty grim environmentally so maybe a more natural alternative, eight is a great age to learn to make proper friendship bands using cotton.

Knex is brilliant for kids who enjoy building.

Fimo is a big hit in this house, we got an own brand version from Amazon that comes with tools for modelling and also accesories to make key rings and earrings. Ds got some for his 8th birthday but all of my DC (5,8,11) enjoy it.

Don't bother with hex bugs - limited replay and the ones we got didn't work terribly well.
