Just waved at my friend... but it was actually a random bloke

Am mortified, I was looking out of the window and saw my neighbour, waved at him, he stopped, smiled and waved back, then I realised it wasn't my neighbour at all Think I'd better make an appointment for specsavers... And hope I never see the random bloke again!

Been there. For an entire week on the school run on the opposite side of the road I would say hi to a friend I haven't seen since before lockdown. As I was always rushing to the school I never really got chance to speak properly. He always shouted hi back but never engaged more. On the Friday I shouted come pick my DS up with me and we can have a proper catch up. Turns out it wasn't my friend but the resemblance was uncanny. Even the way he walked. I was so embarrassed. Luckily he saw the funny side.

Ahwig · 17/06/2021 19:34

My son was a life guard and when I went swimming he would often be there sitting on a tall chair. I saw him and went over and tickled his feet as it was the only bit I could reach and said hi. Was slightly embarrassed to see my son walking over to me in hysterics obviously not the young man in the tall chair. I booked laser eye surgery quite soon after this

fluffysocksgoodbookwine · 17/06/2021 19:35

Some bloke cycling past in the other direction today smiled and said
'Hi, how are you doing' in a totally 'I know you' way.
I've no idea who he was. So he's probably having the same experience as you.
(I'm past 40, he was a good 10 years younger than me, I was sweating in Hi-Vis and a cycle helmet, so definitely not flirting!)

SpacePug · 17/06/2021 19:41

Haha don't worry this has happened to everyone at least once I'm sure. A man came up to me in a cat park almost ran like hey how you doing, then looked confused like he was trying to think where i was from. I said "(supermarket name) he said oh yeah...and the look of cringe on his face. He was a regular in the shop I worked at

Worstyear2020 · 17/06/2021 19:41

We can't be the only people who did that right? Blush

berylandcynthia · 17/06/2021 19:42

sounds like the beginning of a novel

I'm afraid the only reasonable course if action is to move home

Returning from a holiday, met my dad at the airport, went over, said hello, gave him one of my bags, saw my boyfriend pissing himself laughing, realised it WASN’T my dad...
I do these things all the time, I’ve definitely got face blindness

OhGiveUp · 17/06/2021 19:46

I once ran up to a friend from behind and tapped her on the shoulder with a ' hi wellyhead' ( we call each other silly names )
Instead of my friend, it was a stranger who said ' pardon, who are you?'.
I made my excuses and slunk into the nearest shop with a burning face.

MrsFionaCharming · 17/06/2021 19:47

My vision is perfect, but my facial recognition is terrible.

Yesterday I saw someone in the work cafeteria that I know. Once I sat down and started to chat to her, realised I didn’t know her at all! Luckily she was new and thought I was just really friendly and welcoming!

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 17/06/2021 19:49

I kissed a random child on the top of the head at a school fayre once. No idea how I confused him with my ds, they were nothing alike. This wee boy had longer black hair, my ds has pretty short dirty blond hair. Poor wee thing got a bit of a shock 😂

ThisCollie · 17/06/2021 19:53

I saw (pre Covid) my best friend coming out of the hairdresser's. I ran up, clapped her on the back and cheerfully said: "just had a haircut?" Then I realised it wasn't her... and just carried on my way without saying anything else!

WhatsErFace2020 · 17/06/2021 20:00

Once a tad tipsy came back from the restaurant toilet flopped into the booth with my friends slapped one hard on the leg and said “I just had to go in the men’s loos” slowly looking around and seeing a bunch of women I didn’t know from Adam. I found my actual table of friends by following the laugher...

Plinkplonk1234 · 17/06/2021 20:01

I was having lunch in a pub with friends when a young man came up behind me and kissed me on the neck! Poor guy was totally mortified when I wasn't who he expected. I've never seen anyone exit a room so fast.Blush
I have often waved at random people, said hello to people from shops, grinned at bus drivers and receptionists. I'm generally quite friendly and cheery so I just brazen it out.

Twospaniels · 17/06/2021 20:32

My husband does this all the time.

He waved to our daughter coming the other way in her car the other day, except it wasn’t her and it wasn’t even the same make of car, it was the same colour though 🙄

mineofuselessinformation · 17/06/2021 20:36

It could be worse - I once whistled at someone I thought was my brother, walking up the path in trunks, in our back garden - until he turned round.
It was the next door neighbour (and an ex-boyfriend!) who had come to feed the chickens. BlushGrin

thenonsensepotter · 17/06/2021 20:37

I slung myself into my dad's car at the train station once, turned to tell him about my journey and it was a complete stranger. His car was parked behind. And quite obviously a totally different car!

espressoontap · 17/06/2021 20:37

Husband got in the wrong car at the petrol station once 😂

@ahwig hysterical! Grin

I have a history of getting in cars belonging to complete strangers because I've confused them with people I know Blush

Batinthehouse · 17/06/2021 20:47

Thank you all! I'm so glad I'm not alone Grin

I tooted and waved at ds's friend's dps out walking their ddog. . They smiled and waved back..
Then I realised they didn't have a ddog (the dm is scared of ddogs.).
Grin

EnfieldRes · 17/06/2021 20:55

I am the opposite and seem to always ignore people I know when I seem them out. I just don't know it's them until I get really close up. For example if my own mother was waving at me from across the street I wouldn't know it was her

TaraR2020 · 17/06/2021 20:56

@EnfieldRes do you suffer from Facebook Blindness?
