I'm cooking chicken that smells quite iffy...

Use by date was yesterday but did smell bad. I was unsure weather to use it but plonked in on top of my prepared veg and harissa mix. Spoke to my husband and said I have two options. Either to chuck the lot out or cook and then see what it's like but that the bacteria would be dead/null cooking at 180+.
So I've done it. Dinner will be ready soon.

Wish me luck

Good luck.... rather you than me. I'd have binned it.

DogsSausages · 17/06/2021 19:04

I would have chucked it out, hope you are both ok.

Everydayisawindingroad · 17/06/2021 19:04

Do not risk expired chicken unless you would like to be glued to a toilet for the next 72 hours. Why on earth would you risk it?

I couldn't!!! Sorry

Wolfiefan · 17/06/2021 19:04

It’s stinking and past its use by date. Why would you??

Diamondinthewoof · 17/06/2021 19:04

Noooo! You were meant to say it'll be fine. Grin

It's so annoying how chicken can smell so off one day after use by. Normally you get a few days contingency!

Well, I do think surely the bugs will be cooked to smithereens. Surely the risk would more likely come from chicken touching surfaces and not being cleaned properly or from my hands etc but I was meticulous with the cleaning

I suspect you’ll be regretting that decision! 🤢

But surely if it smells iffy you chuck it out no matter when the use-by date on the packaging is.

Diamondinthewoof · 17/06/2021 19:07

Becausee! I had ruined alllll the veg put putting it on there (sweet potato, leeks, peppers, Harris's and oil) and feel like it's such a waste :(

Cooking won’t kill all bugs. It’s won’t make it not having started to rot. Hmm

CasaBonita · 17/06/2021 19:08

That's rank. Even if you have cooked it do death it'll still smell minging!

mbosnz · 17/06/2021 19:08

So long as you're not feeding it to anybody else.

Aquamarine1029 · 17/06/2021 19:08

If chicken smells bad, it's bad. Ffs. You never eat gone off chicken, regardless of the temp it's cooked to.

WimpoleHat · 17/06/2021 19:11

Ignore the use by date. Is it grey and a bit slimy? If it smells bad, especially after you’ve left it for 10 mins to get rid of any packaging smell, then you really shouldn’t risk it.

icelollycraving · 17/06/2021 19:11

I understand not wanting to waste good, but you’re going to be ill. If you’re not, you must have guts of steel.
If chicken smells off, it isn’t playing a trick Hmm

Well it might be a waste of food but it’ll also be a waste to violently shit it all out post-meal and feel absolutely awful for days with food poisoning.

Dementedswan · 17/06/2021 19:13

Have you eaten it?

piefacedClique · 17/06/2021 19:13

Often the smell is from the packaging abs once it’s aired it’s not so bad. I would have done the same as you... Harissa will mask it well! Good luck!

icelollycraving · 17/06/2021 19:14

I must get some magical harissa Grin

cashoncollection · 17/06/2021 19:14

You’re insane to even consider eating it

Chicken in plastic packaging often smells a bit suspect even well within date. I suspect you'll be absolutely fine. I'd have eaten it.
