I'm cooking chicken that smells quite iffy...

Use by date was yesterday but did smell bad. I was unsure weather to use it but plonked in on top of my prepared veg and harissa mix. Spoke to my husband and said I have two options. Either to chuck the lot out or cook and then see what it's like but that the bacteria would be dead/null cooking at 180+.
So I've done it. Dinner will be ready soon.

Wish me luck

I’d never risk it with chicken.

DogsSausages · 17/06/2021 19:16

I would have just thrown it out and has the roasted veg

SimonedeBeauvoirscat · 17/06/2021 19:16

I have pretty relaxed food standards but iffy chicken is where I draw the line. I know the waste of the veg is frustrating but seriously. Step away.

Even when we were at our most broke and the mortgage was eyewatering I would never have risked this.

Make up some garlic butter and boil some spaghetti.

Make sure your phone is well charged.

You’ll be on the loo for a long time, might need some entertainment.

I would use chicken that’s a day or several past it’s date, provided that it looked, smelled and felt OK. I wouldn’t use chicken that smelled off.

The spoilage bacteria might be killed by cooking but the toxins that they produce won’t be and it won’t smell or taste right.

Prestel · 17/06/2021 19:19

It's so annoying how chicken can smell so off one day after use by.

I had a chicken once that smelled really off before the use by date and was merrily cursing the supermarket until I discovered our fridge had stopped working! Might be worth checking if yours is working ok, although there were lots of stories of rank turkeys last Xmas, so it does seem to be a thing that happens way too often these days (maybe the supermarkets need to check their fridges!)

Diamondinthewoof · 17/06/2021 19:20

@piefacedClique

Often the smell is from the packaging abs once it’s aired it’s not so bad. I would have done the same as you... Harissa will mask it well! Good luck!
See I know there's often a smell of sorts but this really did make me second guess it. Nor ally I'm not too uptight about dates.

However, I just opened the oven there and still smelled it. I took a small bite and thought i could taste is off so I spat it out now we are ordering dominoes.
Uft what a waste...it was a HUGE mound of veggies plus 8 chicken thighs :(

@Diamondinthewoof are you OK, or do you need an emergency delivery of Andrex?😨

pussycatlickinglollyices · 17/06/2021 19:22

Cross posted - well, at least you didn't eat it.

Mangofandangoo · 17/06/2021 19:22

Even my DH who will eat anything wouldn't touch that chicken 😬

Yeh deffo nothing wrong with fridge but I think youre right about supermarket fridges. Plus weather has been warmer maybe that's had an effect 🤔

Yes, just read about the toxins and that also swayed DH not to eat it.

Let us know tomorrow how that’s gone eh? You’re brave is all I can say.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 17/06/2021 19:24

At least you won’t shit yourself inside out now 🤷‍♀️

Worth the waste and the spend on a Dominos in my opinion.

I should have but I stupidly plonked the chicken on top and then thought "damn, shouldn't have done that" then felt I'd gone that far I may as well keep going lol

But no, not going to eat it. So we will never know what would have happened but maybe that's for the best Grin

I will start by saying I eat any old shit and have a cast iron stomach.

Our family had Salmonella from undercooked chicken (not cooked by us) a couple of weeks ago. It incubated for over 5 days so don't assume just because you feel ok tomorrow it will be ok!

First sign was a temperature and then a week (not an exaggeration) of sitting on the toilet.

My DH lost nearly two stone.

If you haven't eaten it yet I really would throw it out.

Haha yes shitting myself was not on my list of "to do" today!

I do it all the time, it's fine!

Chicchicchicchiclana · 17/06/2021 19:26

I never eat chicken getting close to it's use by date. It is ALWAYS off before you get there imo.

EishetChayil · 17/06/2021 19:26

Urgh!!!

Jesus. That sounds horrendous although could do with losing 2 stone right enough haha

I did also just read about a woman who got food poisoning on honeymoon and it paralysed her stomach so now she cannot eat.
Omg didn't realise how bad food poisoning can be!!

I've had it once before after eating at a restaurant but was sick for two days then fine. Not that that was great but not as bad as some stories!

I’m glad you’ve decided not to risk it. I don’t think it’s worth it with chicken.
For what it’s worth, I had some chicken this last week that went off before its use by date - I think it may be to do with the hot weather (which must have affected it on its short journey from the supermarket fridge to my fridge). I was tempted at first to make the best of it, but it just didn’t smell right and I had to throw it out.
