Another "identify this children's book" thread!

I think it was about a little girl growing up in Ireland - possibly in a farm. She was very close to her father - and maybe he died towards the end of the book.

When she went to school, she wrote a story and used the phrase "green, broken glass" and her teacher chastised her severely saying it should have been "broken, green glass" (or the other way round).

She got her period and there was reference to her thinking it was like the blood when lambs had their tails docked.

Any ideas?!

Gosh yes! I read this book too, and I rememebr that very phrase!
trying to rememebr...but I don't think it was a children's book as such?

HoollyWugger · 17/06/2021 12:08

Maybe it wasn't then! I was quite fond of reading my granny's library books ConfusedGrin

And how weird to think I'm not the only person with that phrase in their memory!

Was it Edna O'Brien The Country Girls?

HoollyWugger · 17/06/2021 12:15

I don't think so ...

You are remembering Mollie Hunter's brilliant "A Sound of Chariots" which is a book I read many times as a teen. It made me cry every time particularly over a dream where Bridie's father is alive and she wakes up and remembers that isn't so.

(And it was set in Fife and not Ireland.)

nancywhisky · 17/06/2021 12:18

ahh right...I got set off on an Ireland chase...

I don't rememebr reading A SoOund of Chariots - but I definitely rememebr the phrase, because I've thought about it often over the years....

CrossPurposes · 17/06/2021 12:27

The lead character is called Bridie McShane so I get the location confusion!
