Yesterday, about ten minutes before I needed to leave for work, a British Gas engineer turned up to do my gas safety check.

I had no idea he was coming, so we re-arranged for today; he told me he needed about two hours, so we agreed he'd be here between 9:30-10am so he had plenty of time before I leave for work again at 11:30, but if he could get here earlier that was fine.

& yet here I am, waiting in like a div, & no sign of anyone to do any sort of check on any bloody thing & no sort of communication to let me know if he's still coming/late/anything else 😡😡😡😡😡😡

How certain are you that this person is genuine? It seems very unusual to have someone turn up unannounced yesterday, then not show today. Could it have been an opportunity for them to look around your house?

LadyCatStark · 17/06/2021 11:42

2 hours?? It only takes a few mins, I’d also be concerned that he wasn’t genuine!

Bizjustgotreal · 17/06/2021 11:43

This sounds dodgy as. Call BG and confirm that this is legit. Do not let them into your house at all without that.

RLOU30 · 17/06/2021 11:44

Never heard of a gas engineer turning up for a 2 hour entry without prior agreement. Sounds scammy.

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 17/06/2021 11:44

Yeah this does not seem legit, even when there was a fault found on my gas safety check and it had to be switched off, it took less than half hour. 2 hours is ridiculous

Aquamarine1029 · 17/06/2021 11:45

What? Something is very wrong here, op. They don't just show up and a check does NOT take 2 hours. If he shows up do not allow him in. Call the gas company ASAP.

RLOU30 · 17/06/2021 11:45

Are you renting OP? Perhaps the agents/landlord arranged and forgot to tell you. Gas safety certificates etc can take some time.

RLOU30 · 17/06/2021 11:45

But not two hours!

contrary13 · 17/06/2021 11:49

I had the annual boiler check this morning - it was arranged a month ago, and in total (and they checked everything including smoke/carbon monoxide alarms) it took 20 minutes. 30 at the very most. Two hours seems... excessive.

Like others, I'm wondering if it's some sort of scam. Get someone elderly/vulnerable enough to assume they've forgotten an appointment and let the "engineer" into their house and who knows what they might pilfer. Can you call British Gas, OP to check the legitimacy of this?

81Byerley · 17/06/2021 12:16

You've told someone you're going to be out...can someone come and sit in your house when you go to work?

TooBigForMyBoots · 17/06/2021 12:19

Deffo check with British Gas OP.

Gilly12345 · 17/06/2021 12:43

Check with British Gas, I don’t think Engineers just turn up without an appointment. Perhaps if he returns you make a note of his vehicle number plate and not answer the door, I think this sounds well dodgy.

3LittleDucksQuack · 17/06/2021 12:49

I rent and BG always write to me to book an apt.
Effectively if this isn't genuine you've told someone when you're out of the house!

Doesn't take 2 hours. Mine takes no more than an hour max. And that's because the guy talks more than works haha

NameChange456789 · 17/06/2021 13:45

Yeah, I agree with pp this does not seem right at all. A very good friend of mine is a gas engineer and he says it would never take two hours for a gas safety check, it's more like 30 minutes. Unless your landlord (if you're renting) has requested one without your knowledge then I am fairly certain this is a scam.

lucysmam · 17/06/2021 13:58

Ah, thank you all, I've been at work since posting. He did have a BG van, but I literally stopped him before he could get any further than telling me what it was he wanted yesterday so didn't ask for any ID or anything.

It is rented & I've emailed my LL to double check but not heard back yet (presume he's also at work).

I think I'm going to ring the lovely ladies in the office at work & see if there's any way I could get someone to cover me tomorrow - I don't know many people round here & the one that springs to mind, who would come & sit in for me, is working herself in the morning.

Are you prone to hysteria? It’s not ideal but not sure it requires 6 angry faces.

lucysmam · 17/06/2021 14:10

Wow, that was such a helpful comment, thank you so much 🙄
