I doubt anyone in that village will be happy to "reach out with empathy" to that man now... The clock's chimed for over 120 years, many people have died, and suffered miseries on a scale it might be hard for us to imagine, with that clock chiming in the background.

If the clock is louder than the legal limit then surely the “incomer” has a point?

If the church is trying to raise £2k to buy the device to turn it off at night, he could fundraise or offer to pay.

This actually happened in our village too a year or two ago. One person complained about a clock that had been chiming for decades. The council actually had the clock turned off. There was uproar in the village. Six months later the person moved, but it took another six months before the clock was turned back on.

What an arse to do that.

Fair enough if the COMMUNITY want it turned off but not if just one person does.

We’ve got a similar arsehole here, incomer complaining about bell ringing practice (50 mins at 2pm on Thursdays). It’s hardly a noise nuisance, it’s very enjoyable. But the new arsehole won’t stop complaining.
