I need to prove that I was in work at a certain point

I obviously don’t have any old bank statements etc or the contract

The place I worked for doesn’t exist anymore

Do I have to contact hmrc for the details ?

You can set up an account with HMRC to access your NI records but I think they will only show your contributions by year. I can't recall if they show work place details.

Looks like you can get more details if you contact HMRC

The company I worked for 20 years ago was taken over not long after I left and there's no way I'd be able to prove how many hours I was employed for.

That would be difficuly for a lot of people I'd think, why do you need to prove it such a long time afterwards?

I don't want to scare you but I had to get these details on behalf of someone from HMRC for a personal injury claim. It was long before the COVID excuse came along and it took me months! I sent a chaser letter every month and finally got a response in July saying "further to your letter dated 12th December". Pretty sure my chasers were still sat in a pile somewhere. Try to exhaust all options while you wait and take copies so you can chase regularly.
