Car insurance & ncd

Talk to me about my no claims discount, I may be having a menopausal moment!

So I haven’t had reason to claim on my car insurance for well over 15 years, however I’ve never yet come across an insurance company who ask for exactly how many years. It’s either 9+ or 11+.

So I’ve just ended a policy with an insurer who do the 9+ but I’ve got lots more and i now only have proof of 9 years.
How does it all work?

You get the same amount of discount after a certain amount of years, so it will show as 9, as that's the max discount. As an example, say it went:
1 yr - 10% discount
2 yr - 20% discount
3 yr - 30% discount
4 yr - 40% discount
5 yr - 50% discount and that's the max, you can't get more than 50% discount off your premium.

Even though you've never made a claim, your NCD proof will show 5 years as shorthand to show you have max discount.

Does that make sense?

Sort of, but what happens when I switch from a company who uses 9+ to a company that uses 11+. I look as tho I’ve misrepresented my no claims as I can only prove 9+

It wont make any difference. I'm mid fifties, no accidents or claims and have driven a company car for last 20 years. Decided to get my own car as well, looked at the comparison sites, put in zero NCB then 18 years NCB- what was the difference in price? Nil

A benefit of being an old fart I guess
