DD has her driving test booked for tomorrow. Her instructor has called and can't attend, what happens now?

Her instructor has had an accident in their car, unable to attend and use their car (we paid for intense lessons and the instructor is hired by the company)

DD is insured with marmalade as a provisional licence holder driver on my car.

We will call the company in the morning, her test is in the afternoon. Will she be able to take the test in my car? Do we need to do anything?

DD is clearly stressing over this very long awaited test. Her instructor isn't hurt just the car off road luckily.

Does anyone know what happens in this sort of circumstance? Fingers crossed we don't have to cancel her test tomorrow.

Oh god how awful for her. And the poor instructor of course. Can she sit it in your car?

ssd · 15/06/2021 21:39

Sorry you asked this already

You can use your own car. She will probably want to spend the morning practicing in your car though, as the clutch etc will probably all feel different for her.

How stressful, as if driving tests aren't stressful enough! X

Is the instructor from a wider company? My instructor ended up not being able to do my test on the day because his car broke down. One of the other instructors took me in hers instead. Thankfully they all used the same make and she took me out for a practice before the test just to get used to her vehicle. I passed!

Bellyvelly · 15/06/2021 21:42

My OH did it his test in my car as his instructor was booked up for weeks and had no time to do the test. It was fine, check here FYI make sure your own car meets the rules www.gov.uk/driving-test/using-your-own-car. Hope it all goes well.

ChatterMonkey · 15/06/2021 21:42

If shes insured on your car then i cant see there being any issue with sitting it in your car.

Double check with the instructer as to whether theres anything extra you need to do, if shes uninjured and letting you down short notice i would hope that she is working with you as much as possible to sort the situation out.

Print off a copy of the insurance as proof that she is insured on the vehicle.

CanIBeACurlyGirl · 15/06/2021 21:43

I'm hoping so. Such a shame (no fault on the instructors behalf of course) she had a 2 hour lesson today polishing up on her parking in their car as well.

I'm trying to google for this evening. It's her own insurance policy as a provisional driver so I'm hoping she can drive with the assessor. I don't know though.

I don’t know about your car sadly! Hopefully someone can come along with the answer to that.

But another thought, do you have Facebook?

I remember this happened to someone years ago on Facebook and they posted in the local area Facebook pages (selling pages / news pages) asking for any instructors to help them out and they got somebody and they took the test in that car the next day.

Good luck.

CormoranStrike · 15/06/2021 21:43

Most instructors have a driving instructor buddy they can call on in these circs

LindaEllen · 15/06/2021 21:44

I did my driving test in my own car. No problem at all :).

KnottyKnitting · 15/06/2021 21:45

My DD took her test in our car. Although, even though she passed, she was only insured as a learner and I had to drive her home afterwards!

KatieKat88 · 15/06/2021 21:46

I passed my test in my parents' car (albeit 15 years ago!)

Smartiepants79 · 15/06/2021 21:47

Definitely get her to practice in it . I failed my first test because my instructor changed her car a week before my test!

tentosix · 15/06/2021 21:47

The main thing is insurance so call them tomorrow for advice. Record the call as I had someone tell me something which the company later denied, so I am a bit paranoid.

CovidCorvid · 15/06/2021 21:48

Make sure the car is spotless inside, someone on here had the examiner refuse to do the test as they said car was so dirty it was a covid risk. 🤷‍♀️

Hellocatshome · 15/06/2021 21:49

Has she practiced in your car? If she is used to it and insured then shouldn't be a problem.

roobicoobi · 15/06/2021 21:51

She is insured. The only time she won't be able to drive the car is if she passes her test.

hartof · 15/06/2021 21:51

I did my third test in my own car and passed whereas the first two I did in the instructors car and failed. Just spend a while in the morning driving around with her, you don't want to cancel it'll be 2022 before she gets another!

Charliecatpaws · 15/06/2021 21:51

Both of my boys sat their tests in their own cars and passed first time, they’d had so much practice in them that they felt more confident doing so, it shouldn’t be a problem. Good luck to your daughter

CanIBeACurlyGirl · 15/06/2021 21:52

Thank you all so much, you are really putting my nerves to rest.

I'm driving her to the test Centre tomorrow so driving home isn't an issue.

I did plan to sit in my car on MN whilst she did her test. Looks like I'll need to find a comfy spot on the curb instead Smile

My car is automatic, same as her instructors and meets all of the requirements, thankfully.

DD is competent driving my car, we have practised lots in the run up so fingers crossed for tomorrow.

I would put a post on your local pages now and see if there are any instructors that can help you out - it's a long shot but an option all the same

roobicoobi · 15/06/2021 21:52

Oh ignore me she is happy to drive your car - good luck to her

Todaytomorrowyesterday · 15/06/2021 21:52

My daughter did her test in her car.
Make sure she practices in the morning. Also check with insurance that she can take her test in the car (seems daft if she insured but ask the question just in case) we took with us the insurance documents etc
Clean the car!
It could be the instructor has a buddy as a backup?

KeepYellowBoxClear · 15/06/2021 21:55

This happened to me about 20 years ago - instructor had a car crash the day before my test and her car was written off. Thankfully she was absolutely fine and I was able to take my test in my dad’s car. I’d never driven it until the evening before and passed!

I’m pretty sure you can still take your test in any car (so long as you’re properly insured). I’d double check with the test center first thing. I’d also let her practice in your car for an hour or so tomorrow so she’s familiar with it and knows where all the bits are she might need to identify/test/know how to use if the instructor asks.

Fingers crossed for her!
