DD has her driving test booked for tomorrow. Her instructor has called and can't attend, what happens now?

CanIBeACurlyGirl · 15/06/2021 21:37

Her instructor has had an accident in their car, unable to attend and use their car (we paid for intense lessons and the instructor is hired by the company)

DD is insured with marmalade as a provisional licence holder driver on my car.

We will call the company in the morning, her test is in the afternoon. Will she be able to take the test in my car? Do we need to do anything?

DD is clearly stressing over this very long awaited test. Her instructor isn't hurt just the car off road luckily.

Does anyone know what happens in this sort of circumstance? Fingers crossed we don't have to cancel her test tomorrow.

Never mind. Does that mean they abandoned the test?
Would some old fashioned beta-blockers or similar help for another time?

roobicoobi · 16/06/2021 15:42

Oh I'm sorry to hear Sad

ajandjjmum · 16/06/2021 15:42

That's a shame, but totally understandable in the circumstances. And at least your car got a good clean out of it! Wine for tonight.

Then on to the next!

At least she knows now what to expect from a driving test so hopefully not so nervous next time.

Roselilly36 · 16/06/2021 16:23

That’s a shame, the last minute change probably didn’t help your DD’s nerves. Never mind, a pass next time.

BiggerBetterHealthier · 16/06/2021 16:36

@CanIBeACurlyGirl

It's a no for this time. Totally lost her nerve and was back within 20 minutes.

Back on the waiting list - thanks for all your help Flowers

That sucks sorry to hear that. I expect the change of plan was enough to knock her off kilter.

Conversely, I lost my nerve during a driving test once and I said I wanted to end the exam. He said we have to either carry on, or leave the car there and walk back. I had clearly failed, I was a shaking crying mess and the fucker made me continue.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 16/06/2021 16:40

This happened to my husband. He used another car and passed first time

CeeceeBloomingdale · 16/06/2021 16:41

That will teach me to read the full thread. Sorry it wasn’t better news, fingers crossed for next time

Longestfewdaysupcoming · 16/06/2021 16:44

All the best drivers fail the first time 😊

Bells3032 · 16/06/2021 16:49

I actually had a similar thing happen to me albeit ten years ago. my instructors car was in an accident the day before. It was also a merc A class so hard to find an instructor with a similar car.

My instructor actually arranged for him to borrow another instructors car and gave me about 2 hours the morning of the test to get me used to the car. I passed by the way

So the instructor should be trying to sort out an alternative. if not they can take it in any car (as a pp said make sure your insurance will cover the test as it may say that a specific adult needs to be with her).

safariboot · 16/06/2021 16:55

Oof. Thankfully it wasn't a walkback (or was it?), I guess she was able to get near the test centre before stopping the test.

Thefaceofboe · 16/06/2021 17:15

I did my test in my own car last minute, just make sure your daughter is familiar with all the controls that aren’t used daily, such as back wipers, how to open bonnet etc

Thefaceofboe · 16/06/2021 17:16

Ooops!! Should of read full thread! Sorry to hear that. I failed first time too and smashed it on my 2nd go Smile

Myusernameisnotmyusernameno · 16/06/2021 17:23

This happened to me. I had no other car so my instructor paid for another test for me

looptheloopinahulahoop · 16/06/2021 17:52

Ah bad luck. For those asking, if you make a mistake at the moment that the examiner would fail you on, they don't finish the test because of not wanting to spend any more time with candidates than absolutely necessary due to covid and so you go straight back to the test centre.

When we were waiting for my son last week we were looking at the clock and thinking that if he'd got through the entire test he'd probably passed and so it proved.

It's so stressful at the moment due to having to wait ages for a new test date but good luck to your dd next time OP.

Oblomov21 · 16/06/2021 17:58

What a shame. Never mind. Well done on getting it all sorted OP.

Good luck dd.

Oblomov21 · 16/06/2021 17:59

Oh sorry. Missed latest post. Next time!

CanIBeACurlyGirl · 16/06/2021 22:03

Thank you all again.

Covid has changed the rules and a fail means straight back to the centre.

I thought I'd just update for anyone reading in the same position. DD didn't fail, her nerves got her and she asked to go back.

She was asked to parallel park on a busy street with cars waiting behind her and another test car in front of her. She can parallel park but we hadn't practised on a busy road. We always practiced away from traffic - will practice on busy from now on.

She pulled parallel and a car came around the corner very quickly (I know, I know!) DD panicked and moved back to let the car round and then wasn't positioned correctly, she reversed and her wheel nudged the curb - not a fail. She then moved forward to correct but didn't look behind her, realised her mistake and her nerves took over. End of test.

We will practice much more in my car at busier times and carry on with her lessons.

The morning of my second driving test my instructor turned up to my house to take me to the test center in a brand new car! Needless to say I was utterly hopeless with the new clutch and drove around crying until the examiner suggested we go back! Lots of luck to her for next time!!

kofiban · 16/06/2021 22:30

No offence but I think that probably is classed as a fail Grin

I'm impressed she went ahead with it though, the odds were stacked against her so she did well to persevere, shows resilience! all the best drivers fail first time! Fingers crossed for her next time.

Longestfewdaysupcoming · 16/06/2021 22:38

Nudging the kerb was a fail when I did my test before parallel parking if you were reversing round a corner and by the time my kids were doing it it’s a fail for parallel park. Or at least it was when they did it in the last few years

orangejuicer · 16/06/2021 22:45

Back in the olden days if you hit the kerb at any point it was a fail.

Sorry she found it tough, fingers crossed for next time.

CanIBeACurlyGirl · 16/06/2021 22:45

You are all probably right, thanks to CV19 she didn't have to do the walk of shame and I drove us home!

Onwards and upwards.

Hitting the kerb deffo not a fail now, my daughter hit the kerb a few weeks ago when she failed her first test during her parallel park but it was only classed as a minor. Anyway we got the Testi app, bagged her a cancellation and she retook it just over a week ago and smashed it (took the test in her own car both times as well). Lots of sympathy to your DD, we had tears and lots of hugs and got the next test booked ASAP before she lost her nerve.

stuckinarutatwork · 16/06/2021 22:57

I failed my first test nudging the kerb on a parallel park. Passed with flying colours on the second attempt.
Good luck to DD for next time. I still hate parallel parking 24 years later Smile
