If you live in a holiday destination....

Inspired by the seaside thread. So many people are opting for U.K. based holidays this year, I don't think I realised how many have an annual abroad holiday until now!

If you live in a holiday destination (seaside, city or country) what would you want visitors to know?

I'll start with... disposable BBQs are dangerous if buried under the sand. They'll stay red hot and burn or cut some poor unsuspecting person's foot if trodden on. Pop them NEXT to the bins on the promenade and everyone else on top in a stack. They can go in the bins when cooled properly by the next morning.

@claracluck1978 Serious question... what's the acceptable thing to do when they stand in the middle of the road because they give zero shits?

I stopped and waited for ages the other week and the man behind us got out and pushed it off by the arse Blush

@PacifyLulu

Genuine question to those that find the thread rude or unpleasant; which bits of advice do you think are unfair?
It’s a very insular and unintelligent view. When people spout off like this I end up feeling sorry for them. They can’t possibly see the bigger picture or understand how the economy works- or that people in relatively normal, non tourist areas put up with this sort of thing all the time.

I am afraid that it makes the complainers look quite uneducated and unworldly. It certainly makes me determined not to support the uk tourist economy.

Forestdweller11 · 14/06/2021 21:32

I think in some cases it is like the Viking hords descending. Made doubly worse because it's been so quiet up to fairly recently

Most visitors are reasonable and it's nice having a chat with them. But some are basically just horrific and the sort of people that on other threads you'd be calling CFers and neighbours from hell.

When I go somewhere in holiday or for a day trip I try not to act like a complete tool.

Oh and I don't especially choose to live in a tourist area.

LadyPoison · 14/06/2021 21:33

Don't leave your litter lying around and park considerately.

Flipflopblowout · 14/06/2021 21:35

OP leaving used BBQ trays hot or otherwise beside the bin is littering, take your rubbish home.

Well we like a slower pace here so usually wait it out! 'I was stuck behind ponies/pigs/donkeys/cows' is often a reason for being a little late to appointments around here...

TheSunShinesBright · 14/06/2021 21:36

I’m sure that this thread wasn’t started so that ‘locals’ had a platform to slag off tourists but seems it’s gone that way anyway.

I live in a part of the U.K. that attracts tourism. One one hand it’s very league of gentlemen (“This is a local shop, for local people, there's nothing for you here!”), stop clogging up our roads... and on the other hand the local FB pages were full of the same people in a state of lockdown angst because of lost trade and folding businesses. ‘When will this madness end! Lockdown is ruining our lives!’.
Many are making up for it this year by adding a third onto the cost of accommodation and increasing prices in shop/bars/restaurants.
FB pages are now full of joy once again.
It’s a funny old world.

poshme · 14/06/2021 21:37

Don't leave your used tampon in a cave on the beach- climb back up the path and go find a loo.

Don't shit on the beach.

Don't shit in a box and leave it on the beach.

Don't leave BBQs burning on heathland. 550acres, several weeks & hundreds of exhausted firefighters later...

Yes, our area needs tourists. We want them to come.

We just want them to be reasonable human beings.

TheSunShinesBright · 14/06/2021 21:38

I agree about litter entirely! Everyone should take their litter home no matter who you are or where you come from.

SamprasTheRabbit · 14/06/2021 21:38

@claracluck1978 Thanks. I felt like a right knob... but kept thinking I was told never to approach a horse from behind BlushGrin

Moose versus car….moose will win

(I live in the US 🤣)

I’d agree with this! Having lived in different parts of the country - towns and a city- I now live in one of the ‘national parks’. People behave badly everywhere. Locals behave badly here too. Not just visitors.

SpikeWithoutASoul · 14/06/2021 21:43

I just want to know more about the naked hikers. @Forestdweller11 ??

SeaToSki · 14/06/2021 21:44

Oh and if you leave food outside, you will probably get a visit from the local wildlife. A raccoon at best and a bear if you are unlucky. Said wildlife will then return every night in case you have left them another feast. They may also try and get into your car and house for more snacks.

AdelindSchade · 14/06/2021 21:45

I love that we have tourists here - the local economy relies on t apart from anything else - and I will always be pleasant and friendly to them whenever I can.

The only problematic thing I would say is they are forever walking into the road as if a pedestrian area(city destination) and driving around you have to be really careful at height of the season. I'm honestly surprised more don't get hit by cars. The don't seem very aware of their own personal space or too busy looking at things. I am probably the same when I'm being a tourist.

Wotrewelookinat · 14/06/2021 21:47

Please learn about tides and sea safety. Inflatable unicorns with kids in in an outgoing tide or when it’s windy isn’t a very good idea… And the RNLI have better things to do.

awaketoosoon · 14/06/2021 21:48

Just fuck off

Don't be shy, say how you really feel!

polkadotpjs · 14/06/2021 21:48

Do people really do wild poos or on the beach? That is vile. Please rake dog poo bags if you're a wild pooper - I feel quite poorly

PacifyLulu · 14/06/2021 21:49

Thanks for your response. I’m interested to know which specific bits of advice you find to be insular and unintelligent. Or is the advice ok but the tone isn’t? I honestly don’t see anything wrong with what’s been said on the whole so I’m genuinely curious as to what others are objecting to.

PacifyLulu · 14/06/2021 21:51

That was to @Eyestotheright

awaketoosoon · 14/06/2021 21:51

In London we welcome tourists-

I have to say as a Londoner they do do things that annoy me. And I love London at Christmas, it's quiet.

piratehugs · 14/06/2021 21:52

PP mentioned don't walk four or five abreast. More specifically, if you walk three abreast on this street, one of you is going to get clocked on the back of the head by a coach's wing mirror.

Forestdweller11 · 14/06/2021 21:53

The naked hikers? Party of about 15, with only rucksacks, hiking boots and those map necklaces. Literally in the middle of nowhere, they could have reasonably expected to have a pleasant hike with like minded people. But they went round a corner and came face to face with a group of chainsaw operators having their lunch - so the hikers wouldn't have been forewarned by the noise of chainsaws. The only word exchanged was 'afternoon'. Hikers exited stage right followed by much guffawing from chainsaw operators.

MustDust · 14/06/2021 21:53

Forgot about the tides, it's such a big deal here as the water will come at you from many directions and you'll find yourself cut off if you wander out as it's coming in. Oh and if the road says don't cross at high tide, then really don't or your car will be on the village fb page for the next week!

Saz12 · 14/06/2021 21:54

I get that “don’t shit al fresco and leave it”, don’t leave rubbish, don’t set fire to stuff by being a knob with a barbecue, don’t underestimate how easy it is to get lost hillwalking / cut off by tide / currents in sea / etc is all really patronising advice. I mean, surely everyone knows that as they’re meant to pick up dog poo, maybe they shouldn’t leave their own poo behind. But there really really is an issue in many areas with people doing just that. It’s minging, and any “what don’t you like about summer visitors” thread is gojbg to include comments on behaviour like that.
