If you live in a holiday destination....

Inspired by the seaside thread. So many people are opting for U.K. based holidays this year, I don't think I realised how many have an annual abroad holiday until now!

If you live in a holiday destination (seaside, city or country) what would you want visitors to know?

I'll start with... disposable BBQs are dangerous if buried under the sand. They'll stay red hot and burn or cut some poor unsuspecting person's foot if trodden on. Pop them NEXT to the bins on the promenade and everyone else on top in a stack. They can go in the bins when cooled properly by the next morning.

Don’t swerve across the road to stop in a passing place! You can stay on your own side and wait for the oncoming car!

If a local tells you it’s not safe to swim, you could consider believing them.

Eyestotheright · 14/06/2021 21:09

I think that we should all try to holiday abroad, best solution.

Charliebradbury · 14/06/2021 21:12

Stop pooing on the beach.... which is something you wouldn't think we would have to say.
I agree about the bbqs, a young boy near me burnt his foot on one recently.
Don't follow sat navs religiously, if the road signs say dead end its a dead end.
I like tourists but I would like to go to the beach by myself and not have my dog find a lump of obvious human excrement or a used nappy etc.

imaginethemdragons · 14/06/2021 21:12

That said, it warms the cockles to see all the families out along the sea front making it look like an old fashioned post card!
I know that you and your kids are having an absolute ball and you will remember this as your first holiday after a terrible pandemic Smile

DinaofCloud9 · 14/06/2021 21:13

I'd agree with respect the sea. Other than that, just have a great holiday and come back next year.Smile

MustDust · 14/06/2021 21:13

@LadyCatStark I can't believe someone beat me to that one!
I'll add, bring nothing but money! Come and spend in our little shops and cafes (not the chain ones like Costa), similarly use a local hotel, not a big soulless one. Research the area, we have some lovely places to visit that aren't in the middle of town.

SamprasTheRabbit · 14/06/2021 21:14

@Malteser71

What’s your advice to folk who quietly visit you every year, never leave litter, and find themselves snowed under with numpties.

Or are you going to shout as us, too?

I'm going to start stamping my feet and putting out my bottom lip soon.

I love tourism to my area. I love that people come here and say how lovely it is. I love telling tourists sneaky little secrets (if you park 30 metres up the road it's free!).
I also don't want to be a dick when I go on holiday elsewhere.

Stay the fuck away.

We don't want you here.

Onceuponatime1818 · 14/06/2021 21:16

@NannyAndJohn

Sure happily; where abouts should we all stay away from?

DinaofCloud9 · 14/06/2021 21:16

Why Nanny?

UnderCaffeinated · 14/06/2021 21:18

The signs says do not proceed if water reaches the causeway, so don't! Safe crossing times are readily available don't be an idiot who gets caught out!

HeddaGarbled · 14/06/2021 21:18

People and towns who are closed minded to visitors can fuck RIGHT off imho

Agree.

During lockdowns our local Facebook pages were full of beach photos taken by locals on their “daily exercise” or “dog walks”. Then lockdowns were eased and we had some visitors. OMG, you’d think the hoards had descended: people complaining they couldn’t get down the high street. I really wanted to suggest the locals stayed at home and give the visitors some space, seen as they’d had the (lovely) place to themselves for so long, but I didn’t dare.

This is a mean thread. Not everyone is lucky to live somewhere beautiful. We should be willing to share. No harm in a bit of gentle education for those who haven’t had our privileges, but this open hostility to non-locals is ugly.

Hear hear.

Holiday in the UK = risk getting patronised by rude locals

LaChatte · 14/06/2021 21:18

I think if you chose to live in a tourist hot-spot then you can't expect people to stay away 😂

NannyAndJohn · 14/06/2021 21:21

I'm just fucking sick and tired of my town being swamped over the summer, especially with Covid around.

Even a quick nip into Boots involves squeezing your way through heaving crowds and a five mile car journey can take over an hour.

Just fuck off.

Eyestotheright · 14/06/2021 21:22

It’s eye opening isn’t it? Stay away and holiday abroad.

SamprasTheRabbit · 14/06/2021 21:26

I don't want people to stay away, I like visitors. I like seeing people in jazzy shirts and floaty dresses and thinking "ah, they're on holiday!". I do wish people would research beaches other than the obvious one. Because then they would have just as lovely a day but not get stuck in traffic.

Charliebradbury · 14/06/2021 21:27

The thing is a lot of tourist destinations love visitors but the increase in people holidaying in the UK has led to an increase in idiots. Its a small proportion but when they bury a bbq and a child gets 3rd degree burns you can understand why people get angry.
It does make life difficult for locals at times, my dh's work actually close on bank holiday weekends as its such a pain for staff to get into work.
I knew when I moved here that I would have to get used to busy summers but I am human and sometimes it can be a bit frustrating.

DinaofCloud9 · 14/06/2021 21:27

Maybe you should move to a drab dull town Nanny.

PacifyLulu · 14/06/2021 21:28

Genuine question to those that find the thread rude or unpleasant; which bits of advice do you think are unfair?

claracluck1978 · 14/06/2021 21:28

Don't have a BBQ on the beach or in the Forest

Don't feed the ponies

Other than that come and enjoy. I'm lucky to live where I do and love having friends and family to stay.

What I don't love is Forest fires raging for days as someone left a BBQ behind or seeing that another NF pony has died thanks to either careless driving or been rescued after being fed bloody crisps or sandwiches.

Worldgonecrazy · 14/06/2021 21:29

Love seeing holiday makers.

But please, for the love of all that is holy, do not walk/sit/camp under the cliffs. Admire their beauty and frequent rock falls from a distance. (Another Jurassic coaster). I feel quite ill when I see families say next to the latest fall, or taking a selfie on a crumbling cliff edge.

Also please check tide times. Lifeboat is called out most weeks to someone who has been cut off.

MrsAvocet · 14/06/2021 21:29

Same as most people really.
Just behave like civilised human beings. Take your rubbish home. Don't treat everywhere as a public toilet.Respect the countryside, farm animals, wildlife and the people who live here.
Our area depends on tourism and we certainly don't want to drive people away but there's been a noticeable change in numbers and types of visitors since the start of the pandemic. It is probably as annoying to regular visitors as it is to locals to be honest, as we are in an area that generally appeals to more "serious" outdoorsy people who are on the whole both respectful of the place and people and capable of looking after themselves. But we have had absolutely loads of day trippers and overnight campers who seem to have no consideration for anyone else, or the place that they apparently are keen to see.

Chewbecca · 14/06/2021 21:30

If all the bins are full, take your rubbish home please.
