If you live in a holiday destination....

Inspired by the seaside thread. So many people are opting for U.K. based holidays this year, I don't think I realised how many have an annual abroad holiday until now!

If you live in a holiday destination (seaside, city or country) what would you want visitors to know?

I'll start with... disposable BBQs are dangerous if buried under the sand. They'll stay red hot and burn or cut some poor unsuspecting person's foot if trodden on. Pop them NEXT to the bins on the promenade and everyone else on top in a stack. They can go in the bins when cooled properly by the next morning.

Don’t assume that local councils provide/pay for the facilities. In my area, because of council cutbacks all public toilets were closed and in certain public areas (beaches especially) they no longer empty bins or cut grass. Local volunteers are now responsible for these services. They also fundraise to provide picnic benches and are responsible for their upkeep.

This weekend several disposable bbqs were left on the wooden picnic benches, despite there being a stone bbq right next to them (which was built by a local volunteer!). Volunteers were out this morning sanding and varnishing the tables.

hitsvilleuk · 15/06/2021 10:35

The problem is that a proportion of people are selfish twats and when you get large numbers the twat numbers also increase. It only takes one person to leave their BBQ burning to give another 100 a bad name.

It's the same whether it's Cornwall, London or Spain. It's just worse in the UK at the minute because the overall numbers descending on tourist towns are high.

If you have an 'all fuck off' attitude you are living in the wrong place whether its the seaside or London

Personally here in Norfolk tourists will be even more welcome this year. Whilst I agree that there is some poor behaviour, for the most tourists I meet are nice and polite. I do enjoy playing tourist guide. Some of our restaurants bars and other facilities can open year round because of the money they make during the summer season, and without the revenue brought in by tourists we would not have many of the facilities we enjoy.

FrangipaniBlue · 15/06/2021 11:00

It's a passing place not a parking spot!!

STOP PARKING LIKE A TWAT and blocking narrow country roads.

Also, if you brought it with you take it a-fucking-way with you.

ExplodingCarrots · 15/06/2021 11:03

As well as the usual take your rubbish home etc I absolutely insist visitors research walks/paths / areas they want to go to to check terrain / suitability. The amount of people I see trying to lug their poor granny/ elderly mum/MIL across rocky uneven paths , hills, and they look half dead is staggering. 'Don't worry mum, we're nearly at the beach , you're doing really well' 🤦‍♀️

Also people trying to access beaches that isn't suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs and expect others to help carry a person in a wheelchair/ pushchair up/down huge sets of steps and get cross when people refuse to help. (Barafundle- if you've been you'll know what I mean)

Litter has always been a problem in mucky Britain 🇬🇧

Definitely. Doesn’t matter where you go.

LimitIsUp · 15/06/2021 11:11

Please drive slowly on New Forest roads, there's very likely to be cows, horses, sheep or pigs in the middle of the road around the blind corner

Please do not feed new forest ponies - it can give them colic and also encourages them to harass people for food, sometimes aggressively

Please don't use disposable BBQs because of the fire risk

Otherwise, enjoy your stay Smile

countrygirl99 · 15/06/2021 11:13

@NannyAndJohn

I'm just fucking sick and tired of my town being swamped over the summer, especially with Covid around.

Even a quick nip into Boots involves squeezing your way through heaving crowds and a five mile car journey can take over an hour.

Just fuck off.

I assume you will be campaigning for foreign travel to be opened up then.
QuinionsRainbow · 15/06/2021 11:21

"Also, please close gates,"

No, NO, NO!

Leave them as you found them.
If they're closed, then close them after you have passed through.
If they are open, then leave them open.

Witchesbelazy · 15/06/2021 11:22

This post is very boris use the shops but don’t use the shops

Close the gate but don’t close the gate

LimitIsUp · 15/06/2021 11:23

I should add, it's customary around here when out walking in the countryside to nod or say hello to others - yes even strangers - when you come across them. This might be surprising if you are not used it to it, but do try and say hello back. It feels like a snub when you don't

stillcrazyafterall · 15/06/2021 11:36

Ok, totally outing, but...

Yes, the 'sea' is a very long way out. It has the second highest tidal range in the world. No, you can't go and find it to paddle in. You WILL get stuck in the mud and have to hope the RNLI can get to you before the tide comes racing in.

If you park your car on the beach and leave it there it WILL get submerged. That said it gives all the locals a really good laugh. There are signs. It has been happening since cars were invented. Learn from other's mistakes, unless your Chelsea tractor is also a submersible.

Except Boris is one person and these are different people with different perspectives and views, the rest of the MNers on this thread haven't clubbed together and come up with a coherent set of policies we want everyone to follow and apparently neither has Boris but he has no fucking excuse
FoxgloveSummers · 15/06/2021 12:23

Quoted wrong post! Doh. Hopefully you know which bit I mean.

Close the gate but don’t close the gate

From the Countryside Code:

www.gov.uk/government/publications/the-countryside-code/the-countryside-code-advice-for-countryside-visitors

Leave gates and property as you find them or follow instructions on signs. When in a group, make sure the last person knows how to leave the gates. Farmers close gates to keep animals in or leave them open to give access to food and water.

Seems quite obvious to me, but then, I live in a rural area.

Witchesbelazy · 15/06/2021 19:00

I also lived in a rural area. I just understand that it’s confusing for tourists being told it’s of great importance to shut the gate but then someone else coming along and saying no don’t shut the gates but sometimes do

Eyestotheright · 15/06/2021 21:14

I too live in a rural area and the locals regularly park and block the farmers gate. Contrary to popular belief not all country dwellers are rosy cheeked pillars of the community.
They also drop litter and drive too fast. Who do I complain to please?

DontWiltMySpinachPlease · 15/06/2021 21:19

Please PLEASE don't swim in Rivers on private land, even if they happen to be adjacent to public footpaths. The reason there's so many signs prohibiting swimming is because the water is not safe for wild swimming. Council run country parks with lakes are much better for this and most towns now have wild swimming clubs that operate from water that is safe and legal to enter.

Mintsmints · 16/06/2021 00:26

Just seen a post of a Lake District site on Facebook in which one local is fed up of all the rubbish left and the crap parking he has put on that it’s time for those who have never been the the lakes before and have no respect to fuck off back to Benidorm.

I can see his point to be honest, it does seems to have got much worse since we could only take staycations

JanuaryJonez · 16/06/2021 00:31

This ^

aurynne · 16/06/2021 00:37

Keep your dog on a leash, you may think they are great off-leash, but while you were talking to a local you dog was laying a massive shit which you then didn't pick up.

NakedNugget · 16/06/2021 00:42

That even though you're on your hols it's really weird to walk around Tesco's with no shoes on

NakedNugget · 16/06/2021 00:50

@Kinsters

Wow, some real charmers on here. Limiting how much milk and bread you buy when on holiday 🤣🤣🤣

I live in an international tourist destination - heritage city, beaches, cruise ships. Nobody here seems overly bothered by tourists. I think it's one of those perculiar uptight British things...

I think people are snobs basically. They're moaning about tourists but not really thinking of how tourists improve their local Economy.

Also, I'm sure all these moaning myrtles have been on holiday themselves at one point or another and in their minds they were probably excellent tourists... to locals they were probably just as annoying as these people find their tourists

I live in a sea side town, when the tourists go home the place becomes a druggies cesspit ghost town... without tourists many people would not have a livelihood
