Does anyone else just love the seaside?

Me & DH are taking the kids to a holiday park by the seaside for a few days this week. Last time we went was when DD was a small baby and I am so looking forward to it! I love the drive over, the smell as soon as you get near of the sea and chips and hot fresh waffles or doughnuts! Then walking along and seeing all the stalls with the fresh sea food. The little shops of souvenirs and toys. I think I could live by the coast, we are lucky to be blessed with some beautiful seaside towns in Yorkshire. DH thinks I am weird, but does anyone else? Anyone want to share their favouritw things or things to do with little children at the seaside?

I love the seaside, I was born by the sea and now live abroad with a sea view from my bedroom window.

I do (did!) enjoy going on city breaks though and secretly enjoy the buzz of public transport and pollution Wink

@garlictwist

Totally disagree! I always get to the beach and think "now what?". There is also something mournful about the British coast. Give me a mountain any day.
Ooh mournful? That's interesting, can you explain why?

Mountains are nice too, but obviously more challenging place to be and less accessible, or is that part of the appeal?

The sea air has knocked me out! Had my lemon topped ice cream 😁 ready for a fun day at Scarborough tomorrow!
We had a paddle in fhe sea (DS first time!) .... it was blooming cold!

You don't get lemon tops down south so some won't know what you're on about!

RubyFowler · 14/06/2021 21:40

I don't think you do anyway, maybe someone will put me right.

Timeforatincture · 14/06/2021 21:44

Yes! So much so that we are moving to the seaside as soon as possible. Just waiting for all the legalities to grind their way through.

cocoloco987 · 14/06/2021 21:51

I live by the sea but don't have a lot of the things you mention as. I do love it though and would struggle to live inland I think. I'm not a huge fan of sand though!

SwedishEdith · 14/06/2021 22:00

I like the coast and rugged empty beaches but not that keen at all on seaside towns. Lived in one for 7 years and always something either depressing or a bit seedy about some of them.

icebearforpresident · 14/06/2021 22:13

I’m admit I’m a bit surprised to be in the minority here but having grown up in a seaside town and having the beech less than 300 meters from my front door I am completely indifferent to it.

I admit, I’m not on the Cornish coast or anything, I’m in a town in Scotland that never recovered from package holidays becoming a thing. To me living by the sea is a nice view in a sunny day, one I’ve seen a billion times before, that’s it.

ListenLinda · 15/06/2021 05:36

Ohh really? Lemon tops are an ice cream in a cone with lemon sorbet on the top. Beautiful Smile

Never heard of lemon tops but they sound lovely!

I’m also in the minority who really isn’t arsed about the seaside or coast in any way shape or form. I’m a proper landlubber, it just leaves me cold 😂 If I was landlocked till the day I die I’d be happy.

GerardWay123 · 15/06/2021 06:41

I don't go to my most local beach (it's heaving) but I do go to my beach hut (less touristy) 30 minutes away. My heart just melts when I go there. It's my happy place.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 15/06/2021 06:41

I moved away from near a seaside town in Ireland, and ended up beside a glorious deserted beach in Australia. I always knew I would end up by the beach again, I sorely missed it in my London years. Pebble beaches are rubbish though!

MistySkiesAfterRain · 15/06/2021 07:02

My favourite was the penny slot machines.

Deathraystare · 15/06/2021 07:07

Do you know what, I even love the sound of the seagulls.

Yeah but you can get the blighters anywhere! I remember when I lived in Peckham (Sarf London) and got confused when I woke up to the sound of gulls!!!

longwayoff · 15/06/2021 07:12

8 miles from the sea here and I love the sea, visit often. But a seaside town in winter can be grim. Very grim.

sandgrown · 15/06/2021 07:28

I live by the sea and over the years have become a bit blasé about it. But when we have visitors I love to see their excitement. Our town gets very busy so I do enjoy having the prom to myself in Winter . My resident seagulls can be a pain but I still get excited hearing then when I visit another seaside town. When my children were small we had lovely days on the sand dunes finished off by an hour on the 2p machines . They each had a little bag of coins and when they ran out it was time for home .

bendmeoverbackwards · 15/06/2021 07:37

@ListenLinda please tell us more about lemon topped ice cream!

PomegranateQueen · 15/06/2021 07:46

We are in the process of moving closer to family and close to the sea again. I am so happy that the sea will be a short bus ride or drive away rather than the 1hr30 minute drive we currently would have to do. I feel like a piece of my soul has been missing for the 7 years I have lived here, dramatic as it sounds Grin

AngelsWithSilverWings · 15/06/2021 08:01

Yes I love it. I'm never happier than when walking or sitting by the sea. We actually live a 10 min walk from the beach and my kids have grown up playing on the beach. Now they go with their friends and paddle board together.

We are on the waiting list for a beach hut and I am dreaming of the day we get the call.

Haha I love the grimness too! I like being the only one in a dismal cafe looking out at a grey sea on a rainy day! I'm possibly a bit weird though I'll admit.
cricketmum84 · 15/06/2021 08:08

Lemon tops are my DHs favourite!

We had gone to Scarborough without kids to see a concert at the open air theatre and had a nice walk along the seafront. We went to the harbour bar and got a banana ice cream for me and a lemon top for him. Crossed the road and he took the first lick of his beloved lemon top. Closed his eyes and said "ohhh I've missed these". Went to take the second pick and the entire thing had fallen off the cone and was being licked up by a very happy passing spaniel 😂 I don't think I've ever laughed so much 😂 his face was an absolute picture. He looked so bereft! I still get the giggles now when I remember it!

RubyFowler · 15/06/2021 08:11

A dropped ice cream is one of life's great disappointments!

ohidoliketobe · 15/06/2021 08:16

You might say that I do like to be beside the seaside... (username joke)
Born and bred by the coast, now raising my dc by the coast (literally, 100m from beach front you can see the sea from our long and front bedrooms).
Nothing is better, busy promenade in summer or the deserted windswept beach on a cold day. Arcades and crabbing. Ice cream in the middle of winter, chips on hot summer evening. The sounds, the smells. I go a bit crazy inland!
We've really appreciated it during lockdowns, having thst space and scenery on our doorstep.
