Does anyone else just love the seaside?

Me & DH are taking the kids to a holiday park by the seaside for a few days this week. Last time we went was when DD was a small baby and I am so looking forward to it! I love the drive over, the smell as soon as you get near of the sea and chips and hot fresh waffles or doughnuts! Then walking along and seeing all the stalls with the fresh sea food. The little shops of souvenirs and toys. I think I could live by the coast, we are lucky to be blessed with some beautiful seaside towns in Yorkshire. DH thinks I am weird, but does anyone else? Anyone want to share their favouritw things or things to do with little children at the seaside?

Me too although I live a little inland as it’s a bit warmer!

ListenLinda · 14/06/2021 10:42

We’re on the way now, i’m more excited than the kids Grin

I love the seaside too. We have a glorified shed summerhouse in our garden and we've decorated it to look like a beach hut. We also have a lighthouse garden ornament that lights up and revolves!

I live in Yorkshire and love going to Cleethorpes, Scarborough, Filey or Withernsea.

A few months ago my sister and I went to Spurn Point and I had my photos of the lighthouse printed out for the wall.

I'm so jealous of anyone who lives near the sea. I love it, even more so in the winter when it's quieter and the sea is all angry and grey.
Would love to live by the coast but sadly I don't think it will ever happen 😔

FOJN · 14/06/2021 10:52

I still remember the excitement of seeing the sea come into view when we drove to a holiday destination.

I've lived in a coastal town for 5 years, I'm nearing 50 and I still have that excitement everytime I return from anywhere away from the coast. The view as I turn off the main road is glorious, I never tire of it or take it for granted.

Having lived near the sea growing up (but rural, where locals knew the sandy beaches but people didn't tend to travel more than 10 miles to get here and not many holidaymakers) - I have also always loved it. Walks, swimming, rowing, rockpooling, surfing etc.

When we got our own house in a city, we couldn't afford the city itself and bought in a suburb in the countryside - but spent all our weekends driving to the suburbs on the coast. So ended up less than 3 years later buying on the coast instead. So now we live 10 minutes drive or 20 minutes walk down the hill to the harbour, where we can row or sail, slightly different direction means swimming spots and some sand, and we spend a lot of our holidays going to the opposite side of the country to a holiday home within the family where there is sand, swimming, surfing, cliff walking and rock pooling etc.

In planning for our retirement (between 10 and 20 years away, depending on few things), we are looking at either getting a small place near the sea in 1 of 2 potential locations, or (or maybe even "and") buying a sailboat that we can live aboard. That's how much I love the sea.

LittleDidSheKnow · 14/06/2021 11:07

@Flambola I live in a peninsula with stacks of lovely beaches, too (wonder if it's the same one!)

Feel very fortunate indeed.

Oh I adore the sea - I could not live inland. I grew up on the west coast of Ireland and now live in Dublin. For a time I lived further inland (an hour to the sea) but I had to move back to the coast.

My dream is to have a second home on the West coast - it is where we spend all of our holidays. Now that my parents are dead we no longer have a base there, but someday, I hope I can afford one.

We also always go to the seaside on holidays - I could never imagine going inland on a holiday abroad. To me, the seaside is holidays - even if it is only for one day.

I have now found my tribe - we should set up a little friendship group from this thread!!!!

I am already set for my summer holidays at the sea this summer with camping chairs, a wind shield, and even a seaside pop-up tent - I will look like a real pro!!!!

Annasgirl · 14/06/2021 11:09

Oh and the coastal view - I get excited every time I drive over the hill near my house on the way home (from anywhere - even a trip to the office) and see my beautiful sea ahead of me.

Frownette · 14/06/2021 11:10

I love it when it's quiet at night, hardly any people if any, and can walk down and have a paddle

BashfulClam · 14/06/2021 11:51

I grew up on the coast and feel calmer next to the sea. It’s a pain though when hoarded of people descend and you are just trying to go about your normal day to day life.

MsCupcake · 14/06/2021 12:14

@LittleDidSheKnow - me too, moved from the middle to near the edge 7 years ago, and in my head I still squeeee when I see the sea 😁

CurryLover55 · 14/06/2021 12:26

Lucky enough to live in Cornwall but I don’t go to the beach as often as I’d like to. My favourite thing is a solo swim in the sea. Heaven!

AmberIsACertainty · 14/06/2021 13:17

Love the sea air and the sound of the waves. Never lived by the sea but somehow it feels like coming home.

pattyparsnip · 14/06/2021 13:30

I love the seaside but more a fan of deserted beaches or walking on a coast path rather than a busy seaside town . I feel I can breathe properly when I'm near the sea if that makes sense.

I'm exactly the same. I know some clifftop paths with stunning views near me that are never busy, even on a nice summer's day. It is blissful. Seeing and hearing the sea completely calms me and makes my world a better place. I will never not live on the coast.
Pyewackect · 14/06/2021 17:52

Yep, grew-up on the Dorset coast.

bendmeoverbackwards · 14/06/2021 18:14

@ListenLinda

Lemon topped ice creams! I could eat my weight in them.
What now?? 😋
garlictwist · 14/06/2021 18:16

Totally disagree! I always get to the beach and think "now what?". There is also something mournful about the British coast. Give me a mountain any day.

SquashMinusIsShit · 14/06/2021 18:17

We're i. The Midlands so a trip to the seaside is a real treat, I was looking forward to May half term so much because I hadn't seen the sea in 18 months!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 14/06/2021 18:17

We went for a coastal weekend away last week. We did two beaches one day and three the next Grin

Fish and chips, souvenirs, ice creams, rock pooling, bodyboarding, and of course, the classic, digging a hole and waiting for the sea to fill it up.

SquashMinusIsShit · 14/06/2021 18:18

I love quiet beaches too, when we go on holiday with my mum it's always by a dog friendly beach (she has a dog) and I .much prefer a quiet, half empty beach to the main, busy one

Ilikegherkins · 14/06/2021 18:22

Harbour bar - if you know - you know Grin

wheresmyhairytoe · 14/06/2021 18:28

I love the feel of your skin when you've had a day at the beach.

Also love it in winter when it's blowing wildly and there's no one else there!

TheVolturi · 14/06/2021 18:53

I love the sea air! I always find I sleep better at the seaside, and so do the kids. There is something mesmerising about the sea, I've never actually been on a boat but I think I did in a past life 🤣. Went to Cornwall (I think) as a kid and there was some sort of museum with a mock of of below the deck of a boat and it felt magical to me.
