Just watching the news all about G7, lots of shots of St Ives that looks like it could be abroad it is so utterly gorgeous!
I’ve never been to that neck of the woods, but my goodness, no wonder people say that Blackpool is a hole, when you compare the two!
I expect it’s an absolute fortune to visit for a holiday. But would absolutely love to go there.
Any one been? Was it a fortune?

We’ve been going for about 20 years, usually twice a year. It’s getting busier and busier to the point it was quite unpleasant to walk about. The G7 publicity will mean it’ll get worse, I’m not sure how the Town will cope.Sad

It is though, one of the most beautiful places on the planet.

@AbsolutelyPatsy

it took us so long to drive to cornwall, the roads in cornwall were so small and bendy, i was too scared to go back, dd had a muffin taken from her hand by a great swooping seagull, and then it rained. i would not want to go back.

i did go back to Falmouth to look at the uni and i did like it but i have been scarred for life to holiday there

Blimey. Don't you think the winding roads are one of the things that make it different in Cornwall the elsewhere, abs that's one of the reasons we go on holiday? And to be fair to St Ives (and I'm not often!) there are signs everywhere saying mind the seagulls. Again tho - a holiday memory! My kids remember stuff like that as a laugh not an annoyance
shallIswim · 14/06/2021 08:55

@Malteser71

Depends what you want though. I agree the lizard is lovely, kynance cove especially.

The thing about st Ives is that it has everything in one place. I can’t think of many places that have five white sand beaches, a harbour, restaurants, etc etc all within such a small place. It’s a honeypot for a reason.

Kynance has had real problems this year. The National Trust who run the car park have closed it several times bc it's been full. And an enterprising farmer has opened fields for parking which has made the cove heave still further. It remains a honeypot sadly and will be ruined by its star status if we're not careful. Just to warn everyone!
Blossomtoes · 14/06/2021 08:59

I have a holiday property there. It’s quite expensive to run it, lack of local cleaners/tradespeople etc

Am I the only person to have laughed out loud on reading this? The reason there are no local cleaners or tradespeople is because they’re priced out by holiday home owners. 🙄

AbsolutelyPatsy · 14/06/2021 09:02

well @shallIswim other people are welcome to like the roads, but i didnt.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 14/06/2021 09:03

it was a long time ago, and when you are used to having picnics on the beach without having your food stolen it was a shock, each to their own

HeronLanyon · 14/06/2021 09:09

Just a warning - and a tip. After 49 years of spending months every year far west August is usually pretty poor weather wise.
Tip - if it’s mizzling and grey or downright gales on one side of whichever but you’re in the peninsula or the lizard etc it’s often sunny the other. Even if not the drive will have been interesting.

shallIswim · 14/06/2021 09:16

I agree August can be disappointing. June is often best by far, and again in September. Which is a real shame

ZenNudist · 14/06/2021 09:18

Thanks @transformandriseup the evening is a good call. Going to try and find a restaurant I'd like to visit Smile

shallIswim · 14/06/2021 09:19

I also find the North coast is more likely to be swathed in cloud than the south. Today is a good example. Am stomping along the coast path near Porthleven in blazing sun but looking north to a bank of cloud which will be shrouding st Ives!
I tell you those G7 leaders were lucky!

olidora63 · 14/06/2021 09:23

Carbis Bay was our childhood holiday destination for many years ...the hotel really was something very special and I have so many happy memories staying there . It was always my birthday week as well! St Ives is fabulous and a short walk from Carbis Bay .Cornwall really does have some beautiful beaches and villages.

megletthesecond · 14/06/2021 09:23

It's very pretty but heaving. Not pushchair friendly at all.
Lizard and Falmouth was better.

shallIswim · 14/06/2021 09:28

Carbis Bay hotel has made itself v unpopular locally, riding roughshod over planning laws to build the infrastructure for G7, and cutting down trees and coastal habitat, all while laughingly claiming to be an eco hotel. It is a long way from that! And has conducted an extensive greenwashing exercise in the name of profit.

HeronLanyon · 14/06/2021 09:35

shalliswim I’m furious about those trees. Absolute disgrace.

wherewildflowersgrow · 14/06/2021 09:40

£775-£3500.

Lots of people are. But what can we do? I've written a stern email to the AA suggesting they rethink the eco status but we shall see....

@Yayayaya20

Sorry to jump on this thread but we have been meaning to go to Cornwall since my eldest was born 10 years ago but the drive down from Scotland always put us off.

Well now you can fly so I absolutely must get booked and experience it next year while the kids are still young. Although I imagine it’s great for teens too if they can try surfing etc!

So for a family of four, flying from Scotland (car hire a possibility) where is the absolute best place to stay? Our main activity would be beaches, mooching round the shops and going for walks. We’d probably book first week in July once the schools stop here.

Thank you and again sorry to be cheeky and jump on.

Yes agree...my son is an ecologist and he was horrified to hear about the destruction! He flagged it up to me last year...surely it’s illegal!

@HeronLanyon, @shallIswim

ooh people taking offence, yet again,

Being angry about wilful destruction of trees is a bit more than “taking offence”.

Ifyoubelieveyouwill · 14/06/2021 10:12

Sorry to say, but to everyone who loves holidaying in Cornwall it’s about to get a lot busier and more expensive now that it’s been marketed internationally with some stunning images appearing in the world‘s newspapers. Lots of people are now saying they want to visit for the first time.

We have somewhere very cheap to stay (family, so mates rates). I love Cornwall but it’s a long drive for us and just too busy when you get there during holiday season. I don’t find it so relaxing.

Our other favourite holiday place is Norfolk. I’m sooo glad they didn’t hold the G7 there as it’s already pretty popular and heaving in summer.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 14/06/2021 10:21

@Blossomtoes beg pardon, i thought they were being funny

RhubarbTea · 14/06/2021 10:54

Some of the places mentioned on this thread are gorgeous, there's no doubt about it. I remember going to them as a child just after we moved to Cornwall and they were amazing, and pretty unspoilt. Fast foward 25 years or so and the following, while stunning, are usually rammed and therefore either impassable or just zero fun:

Porthcurno
St Ives
Kynance Cove
Helford Passage

I'm not saying they aren't amazing because they really are, but if it's unspoilt solitude you are after, you won''t find it there. Grin Falmouth is going the same way, I was there recently and it is SO much more rammed than it used to be, to the point it's not really enjoyable anymore. And that was both the town and beach.
