Weird new mole

Had a new freckle/mole (what’s the difference?) appear on my forearm within the last month or so.
Today I noticed it had a weird layer on it and as I rubbed it, it kind of peeled off.
Initially dh saw it earlier as I was looking at it and he said it looks more like a burn or a mark than a mole but I said it wasn’t, that it had been appearing over the last month or so.
Dh is now jumping up and down demanding I make a doctors appointment on Monday - is he being over dramatic? Would you consider this a waste of a GP appointment- not that I’d expect to actually get one for weeks and weeks! What can a GP do?

Of course you need to speak to Gp. Some let you send in a photo.

Definitely, definitely consult a GP. Are you able to post a picture here? Does it meet any of the criteria here?

What a GP can do is look at it. They may well say it looks fine. They may refer to dermatology (if suspected melanoma you should be referred on a two week wait). Doesn’t mean it is a melanoma. I had a blue mole appear, GP did urgent referral but the consultant said it was harmless. I just keep an eye on it and make sure it isn’t growing.

However. I had a weird patch of skin of my face. I caught it and it bled profusely. It took ages to stop. The skin looked almost translucent and you could see the veins running through it. GP agreed to refer me to Dermatology (not Two week wait as not suspected melanoma). Saw the dermatologist who said it was a form of skin cancer! It’s a Basal Cell Carcinoma. I was totally shocked. I was confident it wasn’t a melanoma, I didn’t realise it could be another form of skin cancer. Pleased to say it’s not the kind that spreads (although they did check). It’s now been removed. So yes, please heed my cautionary tale and get it checked out!

Please get it checked by your GP asap.
I read somewhere that some branches of Boots have mole clinics. I would also look into this to see if they can also review it before your Gp appointment. If you get one go to GP appointment too.

Yeah I was just looking at doctor Google and have managed to convince myself that I’d be incredibly stupid not to at least talk to someone about it even if I can’t get in to see anyone.
I’m actually a very sensible person but I never go to a gp.
I got told off a year or 2 ago when calling for one of my dc that I was a ghost patient because I don’t get ill or having illnesses requiring medical intervention and basically losing them money 🙄 so at least this way I won’t be a ghost patient!

I’ll see if I can get a picture although it’s pretty pointless really isn’t it?!

I don’t know if they’re very clear here!
But you can possibly see some of my others in the background and they look perfectly circular. This one is bigger and looks kind of scabby after I rubbed the weird flakey layer today.

Anyway, I’ll definitely call the gp on Monday. The Boots here doesn’t offer that service sadly @purplecorkheart but thanks for bringing it to my attention, it might prove useful for others too.

None of is here are experts so please please get it checked out asap. I had a slightly bigger mole removed from my hand. It turned out to be fine (there was some fancy name for the growth that I don't rememer). The stress and worrying before I went to get it checked was the worst part honestly.

Zeev · 11/06/2021 23:07

Yea you need that seen. Probably nothing but it is a bit irregular.

TheChosenTwo · 11/06/2021 23:10

Yes don’t you worry, I’ve worried myself and usually think I’m calm and unflappable so I’ll definitely be ringing on Monday morning.
Although I can predict not being able to get an appointment for weeks, honestly!

I called the doctor this morning, was number 47 in the phone queue and didn’t have time to hang around on the phone for an hour so I’ve done their e-consult form and sent some photos.

*@TheChosenTwo * please don't panic - its very wise to get any new mole checked out but often they aren't dangerous. I had one on my shin appear last year, it looked irregular around the edges, different shades and was rough in appearance. I sent a pic to the doctor, had a phone consultation and he gave me a face to face appt. I was petrified. He looked at it under the magnifying glass and said it was just a normal skin growth and totally harmless. Since then I've actually scratched off the crusty brown surface and its disappeared! Wish I'd tried that before hand!
