If I really love the 90’s Pride and Prejudice series, what else might I like?

I need something to binge. I’ve got Netflix, Amazon Prime and some Sky channels and On Demand stuff through Virgin Media.

Any suggestions?

The Tudors?

The Other Boleyn Girl? (film not series).

Death comes to Pemberley - PD James' idea of their post P&P life & of course being James there is intrigue. It's wonderful & the casting is perfect.

The older series of Emma with Jonny Lee Miller as Mr K

Oh yes, The Tudors is a great shout. Don’t know if you can still get Versailles anywhere (I think it was on Ch4, or BBC2). That was another good historical romp.

Wives and daughters - Justine wadell one.
The Johnny Lee miller version of Emma
Agree with death comes to pemberly. I was worried it would be a bit rubbish and ruin p&p but it was really good.

Ooooh a lot of like minded people here Grin

miffmufferedmoof · 11/06/2021 21:10

Don’t watch Cranford if you don’t like sad things!

Valmont with Colin Firth

The Buccaneers was AMAZING.

Middlemarch is on BritBox featuring a young Rufus Sewell in tight britches and a lovely burgundy greatcoat.

YesToThis · 11/06/2021 21:16

Maybe Brideshead Revisited - the Jeremy Irons version?

Or from another angle because it's riffing off the BBC version in particular - Lost in Austen?

Hope and Glory (set in WW2 so not really period but still a good film)

Cranford is just lovely.

North and South if you like a dark, brooding hero (and who doesn't?)

My all time favourite was Barchester Chronicles from the early 80s - Donald Pleasence cast against type as a kindly old clergyman and a young(ish) Alan Rickman as the utterly repellent (but weirdly attractive, how does that even make sense?) Obadiah Slope.

The Way We Live Now with David Suchet

Callmecordelia · 11/06/2021 21:35

The dvd of Wildfell Hall is available. I have it. Smile

My sisters and I still occasionally quote it to each other. No one can say "I daresay" like Toby Stephens....

twiggytwoo · 11/06/2021 21:37

What about Hornblower or Sharpe?

Ormally · 11/06/2021 21:39

Maybe the series of Bleak House with Anna Maxwell-Martin, although it is a bit darker than P and P. Very good though.

A drama from a few years back called The Paradise.

ArtemisBean · 11/06/2021 21:42

I second Barchester Towers! Also War and Peace with Anthony Hopkins. The Pallisers. The First Churchills. All oldies but goodies!

Yes I'd forgotten Barchester Chronicles - definitely. Also has Humphrey from Yes Minister Smile

Oh my goodness I am so jealous. I had it on dvd, lost it in a house move and regularly think that would be my perfect watch tonight Tara Fitzgerald and Toby Stevens were brilliant.
Fruityfriday · 11/06/2021 21:50

The Tenant of Wildfell Hall can be purchased on Amazon Prime !

Notonthestairs · 11/06/2021 21:50
