Find me a house

We are looking to simplify our lives. We are thinking of selling our London house and buying mortgage free. We can live anywhere in UK, but have a long lists of must haves!

  • on a quiet street. We have loads of cats and am terrified of one getting hit by a car
-nice and open view. We have a lovely view right now and I realise it’s quite important to us that we are not overlooked
  • 2 bedrooms is fine.
  • somewhere warm and sunny with a south facing garden (I know!)
  • voted mainly remain
  • can be rented easily if we are not there

We don’t need schools. Fine with old or modern. We can do some redecorating but no major renovation. We work remotely so proximity to London is not important.
Budget is 250k, 300k at a stretch. Anything above we would need a mortgage.

So wise mumsnetters any suggestions?

Just a quick google in our area
Stillington near easingwold
Not the prettiest house in the world but it looks to have a decent bit of land and stillington is pretty quiet

I always wanted this one.
I thought it was so cute
Ours was further up on the same green
I might be wrong but I’m pretty sure there’s nothing behind it

Sowerby is practically part of thirsk
Just ten minutes and in you’re in the lively market place which hasn’t changed much since Adam was a lad
We used to take our three cats with us when we went down there for the weekend and there was never a problem
You’re well set back from the road and it’s never very busy anyway

The link would help

Here you are. This road is so pretty in real life and the views out to the mill and surrounding hills nicer than shown in the pictures. Not sure about the remain voting but a good alternative community round there:

Ventnor, Isle of Wight? Not sure about Remain on the island but Ventnor itself is pretty boho.

Sunny and outlook - YES. If you can scrape up some cash to do it up, try this wreck with a view for 250k.

You need to be fit in Ventnor. Or if you aren't before you get there, you soon will be.

Lightsabre · 11/06/2021 18:20

I think you'd need to be looking at the SE or East Anglia for weather. South Downs is pretty close to the coast but will be out of budget I think. Maybe Somerset/Devon?

This is lovely too! The immediate street looks nice and quiet. Is the busy street in yellow very close by? One of our male cats is a bit of a roamer!

@Dreamer2468, the house is a bit all over the place and the circular stair would make me dizzy. Cats would love it though! Lie there waiting to trip me up Smile

I love the one on Isle of Wright, amazing views. It seems they already have an offer of 305k. 50k over asking!!

The Scottish ones are nice, but it must be COLD there!

I just showed these houses to DH, thanks all you wonderful mumsnetters for sharing!

He likes the one near Morpeth best. I think it is currently a holiday let? Beautifully done and we can imagine living there. There is no floor plan, I wonder if the garden is south facing?

blitzen · 11/06/2021 22:18

Oh wow, is that the link I shared?! If it is a holiday let then I would definitely suggest you go for a holiday first (and also get an afternoon tea at The Running Fox). Good luck x

A couple from my neck of the woods.

LemonSwan · 11/06/2021 22:59

Just as an FYI - west is best always.

The sun will rise in the front of the house and set in the back. It means you have excellent light levels all through the day except for midday when the sun is at its hottest keeping the house cool. You also have the sun set on the back doors/ patio area for evening relaxing on a nice summers day.

East facing is second best as its the reverse (morning sun patio and can have dining at the end of the garden), followed by South in 3rd place by a long way as you only have light entering the home directly for a few hours a day from one direction. And north is last place..

Gorgeouslilgirl · 12/06/2021 06:21

Thanks Lemon that’s good to know and makes sense.
@blitzen, thanks, I’m a tea addict and love a good afternoon tea Smile

The Arkham one seems to be in a nice open rural area.
