Fighting it right now. Have decided a lie down then I will start at 12....

DownUdderer · 11/06/2021 11:17

Is it because you want to complete the task perfectly? Is it that you need to train yourself "done" is better than perfect?

Errrrm 😬

Fiep · 11/06/2021 11:24

Starting is the hard part. Use the pomodoro technique: set yourself a 5 minute timer on one of those kitchen timers and force yourself to do SOMETHING that starts the project off until the timer goes. Then you’re allowed to go back to MN. In all likelihood you’ll want to keep going!

Also maybe depending on what you’re doing, don’t start at the start if that’s hard. Start with the easiest / most interesting bit.

I have a massive procrastination problem, it seems to have got massively worse in the last week or so. I usually am very good at getting on with stuff and keeping focus (legal type work) but I just can’t do it at the moment

MissOrganisedMe · 11/06/2021 11:30

I'm terrible. Here for ideas....

HarryDavidj · 11/06/2021 11:30

Agree withFiep. There was something on the radio about this the other day. Someone has managed to write a whole book based on a 15minute timer theory. Set a timer for 15 mins, do something to start. Then stop at 15min. Have a break doing something else, then do the 15minute thing again, repeat until really in the swing of it.
Someone else managed to write a book on a countdown theory. (I’m fascinated on how people get book deals on relatively thin ideas!) Basically, if you are procrastinating you need to countdown from 5 and when you get to 1 you just get up and start. That is less convincing to me!

TUGGY2006 · 11/06/2021 11:40

It's my biggest problem in life and I hate it. I literally lie in bed in the morning wide awake thinking of all I have to do and knowing ill be late for school run or work but literally can't get up. I get progressively more annoyed with myself until I finally get up like a demon and blame everyone else for my lateness. I'm not much better during the day hence why I'm on here 😞. Honestly it's awful so I'd love to hear if anyone has any tips!

I've learned about this recently. Been meaning to put it into action (oh, the irony)

It's not just one task, its everything! I'm supposed to get dressed but I cannot find the motivation! I have an assignment to do that I've been putting off for months. My house is a mess. Life admin stuff undone. I'm not even working at the moment so what the hell is wrong with me! I can't be a lazy oaf like this.

If you genuinely feel like your procrastination is in control of you rather than the other way around, it is worth looking into adult ADHD and whether you think you have it.

You do not need to be hyperactive or unable to pay attention to things (this is a bit of a misnomer). Most girls are not. Most adults are not. Hardly any adult women have the hyperactive portion.

Damnloginpopup · 11/06/2021 11:58

Yes. I proclaim, loudly,

"Procrastination is the thief of time"

This is a quote from Catch 22. So I am quoting, using grown up words and being pretentious all at the same time. This of course means I have made a great effort and deserve a biscuit.

Or a doughnut.

Might have done cake actually.

TUGGY2006 · 11/06/2021 13:31

I should of mentioned I did actually listen to 2 free podcasts series on audible, 'start here' by Mel Robbins and 'Habits for happiness' by Tim Sharp both good but after a few weeks I've slipped back into my bad habits. I'm also not working at the moment and I think that's made me far worse as I know I can put things off until the next day or week even. I think another poster mentioned the egg timer to make a conscious effort to just start and I think that's a great idea. It really is an awful habit but the funny thing is I can't abide other people who don't just move themselves to get stuff done and then complain about it. I'm a disaster

UnwantedGain · 11/06/2021 13:39

I’m very good at procrastinating. It’s one of the few things that I’m good at currently.
It makes me fat too. Oddly, I procrastinate when it comes to snacking. Is this the same for other procrastinators?
It’s actually making me life rubbish.
