HV comments on extended breastfeeding?

Not a BF v FF debate.

DS had his 1 year check over the phone yesterday. Questions about his diet, milestones etc.
Than asked about his milk intake. When she hears he's breastfed she asks if he's drinking any other milk which he isn't. I said I've tried cows milk in a sippy cup a few times but he doesn't seem to like it.

She then says 'oh, well he really should be drinking another milk by now as breast milk isn't enough for him. There's no iron or calcium in breast milk past 6 months' then went on to suggest I try oat, soya or aptamil milk as it has everything in it. Or, if I'm just going to feed him breast milk I should be give him a multivitamin.

Am I right in thinking this is really shitty advice and not at all true?
I challenged her of course as we'd already spoke about his food diet and how well and varied he eats and expressed no concerns about his health or development.

Her response was that it was up to me but that's what is recommended?!

She is so ignorant my goodness.
And breastfeeding a 1 year old is hardly extended breastfeeding!

This is why they get a bad wrap, shit advice.

Every time there's one of these threads about ill informed if not downright thick HVs I ask the same question ..as an ex nurse we had ongoing education and fit to practice assessments ..do hvs not have this ? Do they just pick up old wives tales and treat them as gospel...it's embarrassing.

@FourTeaFallOut

Iron? Presumably he is weaned on solids and meets his iron intake via that route?

Or are formula fed children relying on milk to meet all their nutritional needs?

Not at 1 year - generally that's when milk intake is hugely reduced and you shift them onto cows/oats milk.
JewelGarden · 11/06/2021 23:32

Oh and yeah just ignore her OP. Although actually a vitamin with iron isn't a bad idea, quite a surprising amount of children that age are low on iron (both FF and BF)

I don't understand the obsession from some HV etc in getting a baby to stop having their mum's milk which is basically a bespoke milk for baby! And instead wanting them to have milk from another mammal

RowanAlong · 11/06/2021 23:55

Keep going with breastfeeding and ignore...I’m not sure what the point of HVs is as they seem to get it so wrong on so many occasions!

I think people have become so far removed from where milk (and meat) comes from, as in the process etc that they abstractedly know it’s from a cow but don’t actually think about it.

I think they just think of it as ‘milk’ that just simply exists in bottles as a sum of its components I.e. calcium etc

So if you were to outright ask them why another mammals milk was better than a mothers milk they’d actually be stumped.

What a load of shit a quick google tells anyone how amazing BF is for aslong as possible. I believe lacks vit d but adults barely get that in their diet it's from the bloody sun so this time of year have him outside plenty and all fine

Babababababybelll · 12/06/2021 07:58

No , sometimes they talk shit.

Just like the rest of us i suppose ha

Keep being a brilliant mum.

Tbf I'm more suprised you had an appointment 🤣

I was once told to wake a child who slept through the night twice for a feed.

Errrrrrrrrrrrr - no .

My Hv at 2 year review said I should only be feeding 2 breastfeeds a day at 9 months, so I can wean off onto cows milk at 12 months ( review was at 9 months on the day, via phone) As this is my second baby I just said ok and carry on BF anyway. I do don't offer, don't refuse and my "baby" is 17 months and still happily BF.

I did try to swap DC1 to cows milk but he hated it and still doesn't drink milk. He will have it mixed with something like porridge. So I haven't thought to try with DC2. I just find even the toddler bottles or cups milk spill and so I haven't bothered to try.

DC1 does say he's only one at school that doesn't drink milk, but he has a multi vitamin, plus a calcium one and yogurt, cheese. He seems ok, tall for age, not think not fat.
