DS’ first sentence!

This happened today - my twins are non verbal and have been using PECS cards to exchange for an item for ages. Last year I had a big court battle to get them into the right specialist school and now they are doing so well.

DT1 has just started making sentences - first it was “I want X” and today he surprised me with “mummy I want biscuit please”. I could honestly cry.

He will be getting a tablet with special software soon so it can talk for him but I expected him to just be able to make one word requests - now it seems i might hear actual sentences!

I know it’s not the typical first sentence but it’s so hard for him to learn and I’m so happy!

Oh that's lovely! Hope you had top of the range biscuirs!! My son took to pecs v well in an ABA school (hated lámh) and shortly after PECS he said a sentence verbally "out mine room!!" his first word was a sentence! He was 4.

PECs really gave him a hook to hang the word on.

Yes basically I have to to give them everything they ask for at this stage as they don’t understand asking for something and not getting it!

@ConstanceMarkievicz that’s amazing! Mine are nearly 5 and DT1 doesn’t seem anywhere close to talking (he can only make one sound - ga, I worry there’s another issue for him). He is suddenly understanding words a lot more but nothing close to speech. I’m not sure he ever will, but frankly I don’t care any more if he has some other way to communicate. DT2 will occasionally have spells where he will say a short word in context (like up or more) for a few days and then he will just stop. DT2 is further behind but he’s also visually impaired so PECS is more of a challenge (never seems to have trouble finding the card for raisins though!)
