Strange eBay situation.

I sold an item over a month ago and the buyer asked to return it which was fine, I accepted this and refunded them as soon as it arrived which was around three weeks ago. All good.

Today, however, they have sent me a parcel by mistake. It’s a duvet set I guessed they wanted to return to another eBay seller but have somehow sent it to me in error. It had their name and address on the eBay postage label and they’d placed the return slip for the item they returned to me 3 weeks ago inside the parcel… I messaged them to tell them they had sent it to me by mistake so if they want it back, I need a postage label but they’ve denied all knowledge of this parcel.

I phoned eBay to ask what I should do and they accessed their account only to tell me this buyer hasn’t bought a duvet cover on eBay so they have no idea where the parcel is from and I should keep it. I sent the buyer photos of their name and address on the postage label but they haven’t replied.

It’s such a weird situation, I’m not sure what to think? It isn’t really my taste so I’d give it to a charity shop really but I’m a bit weirded out by it!

Could they have used a work printer or something like that and printed 2 copies by mistake, the 2nd of which was picked up by someone else instead of their own?

Was the item you sold a similar weight but more valuable by any chance?

They could be scamming you - they can prove they sent you a parcel of a similar weight and demand the refund, saying you're scamming them.

They returned the item to me 3 weeks ago and I refunded them straight away which is why it’s so strange! Definitely not a similar weight or size at all, the thing they returned to me is tiny and postable but the parcel that arrived today is a duvet set. I honestly don’t know why they’ve sent me it and they denied any knowledge of this parcel plus eBay said they haven’t bought a duvet set. Such a weird one, I don’t really know what to think.

Stick it in a cupboard and wait to see if you hear anything more. After 6 months you're ok to use or dispose of it at your choice.

You've done enough sleuthing. Smile

I wonder are they going to email you in a few weeks saying that they will send money for postage via paypal. Then accidentally send you £500 instead of £5. Ask you to return the extra money . Couple of weeks later you get told that the £500 was sent from an hacked account. Your £495 is gone.
