Help! I'm in an Air BnB and.....

There are flies everywhere!!! As in, loads. Like a horror film. There's a very nice kitchen extension, with a glass gabled window and sliding bifold doors to one side. The gable is full of them. Bluebottles, buzzing things, even a massive bumble bee. We came home to about 60 dead flies on the window sill today. We've changed the bin everyday since we arrived and kept the surfaces spotless but they keep coming. We lit a citronella candle but they just loved it. The owner left a can of fly killer on the side so it looks like this is normal? What do I do??!!!

I'm supposed to be relaxing with my glass of Prosecco in the garden but instead all I can hear is buzzing.

Have you checked in the wardrobe for a body?

NavaniKholinRocks · 09/06/2021 20:09

Probably not much use in this instance, but I find a fly zapper racket quite satisfying to wield Grin

JayAlfredPrufrock · 09/06/2021 20:09

This happened when we stayed on a pig farm.

Grim.

Faranth · 09/06/2021 20:16

Did you leave a window open? The last place I lived I opened all the windows on a sunny day not long after moving in, only to have a house full of vicious biting flies within 5 minutes.

In the end I waited for it to get dark, and switched lights on and off in sequence to sort of herd them into the loo and then doused the room in fly spray and shut the door.

I do not miss that house.

Denimcutoffs · 09/06/2021 20:17

Yes there are bifold sliding doors to the garden so they're open all day! That's the point of staying here really!

If it's blue bottles I'd assume there is something dead nearby.

I'd contact the owner and say it is unacceptable and they need to come and sort it.

LiJo2015 · 09/06/2021 20:20

Are there any plants in the house? In the past when i had a fly infestation i found the source in a plant.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 09/06/2021 20:22

We had this in an AirBnB barn conversion but with wasps, there was a nest in the rafters. I was scared to sleep there.

XiCi · 09/06/2021 20:24

Have you contacted the owner? You really need to This happened in my mum's house once, there was a dead bird behind the fire that had come down the chimney

Dreamer2468 · 09/06/2021 20:25

We used to get lots of flies in our old house. There was a field of cows next door and not much we could do other than keep the windows shut.

TheVolturi · 09/06/2021 20:25

Urgh, that's not acceptable. Contact the owner (after you've searched for dead bodies)
Although mil lives in a house where the garden backs straight onto farmland (cows and sheep) and there are absolutely loads of flies in her house. She says it's because of the farm animals but the farm buildings are miles away. Her house is clean!

Denimcutoffs · 09/06/2021 20:29

Yes it backs directly onto farmlands. Supposed to be beautiful views of the lambs on the hills - which there are- but tempered by the dead flies under my feet whenever I walk through the kitchen!

You need to call the owner immediately. This is totally unacceptable.

2tired2bewitty · 09/06/2021 20:34

Have a quick google for cluster flies, though I think the advice is just mostly to go heavy on the fly spray Sad

Suzi888 · 09/06/2021 20:37

Happened to my mum once. Builders left the remnants of their fish and chips under the floor boards. Blue bottles everywhere!
The owner needs to sort it!

Wegobshite · 09/06/2021 20:38

Have you got a fan
Flies hate turbulence which is why I have ceiling fans in my house in the kitchen living room bedrooms 😀
The fly fuckers have given up visiting me as they get blown back out

Rollergirl1980 · 09/06/2021 20:39

We had this when a rat had died under the floor.

AuditAngel · 09/06/2021 20:39

We had this once, think it was a dead bird in the chimney

frumpety · 09/06/2021 20:39

The joys of living in the countryside during fly season, we get inundated every year when the cows move into the field next door to us. Is it quite a new let ? what with the can of fly killer left out, I wonder if other people have complained and that's the only solution the owner could come up at short notice. Are there any reviews ?

Dead bodies tend to have quite a distinctive smell, so I am sure if there is one lurking inside you would have noticed the smell by now.

osbertthesyrianhamster · 09/06/2021 20:40

Ewww. I'd be worried about paranormal activity and demonic experiences Grin. Not really, I'd contact the owner immediately, that's unacceptable.

SpaceRaiders · 09/06/2021 20:45

This is kind of to be expected if you’re close to farmland. You can’t have the lovely views without the critters unfortunately. We lived in a barn conversion with cows in the adjoining field and this used to happen throughout the summer months. Each evening we’d fly spray the house then spend an hour outside until the smell dissipated, then returned to piles of dead bugs.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 09/06/2021 20:49

Could you get some spiders? Wink

poopyface · 09/06/2021 20:53

Urg we had this, had to call the owners as it was that bad, we went out for the day and they must have done some mega fly spray as there were loads of dead ones when we came back - went home the next day (as planned) thankfully

Backtoblack1 · 09/06/2021 20:54

We had this when we moved into a new property. They was some kind of glue on the windows they were attracted to x

LibrariesGiveUsPower45321 · 09/06/2021 20:56

Not uncommon if you’re near farmland. Dung etc attracts them. Contact the owner, they should have measures in place.
