What the chuff is Audible all about?!

StopSayingDueDiligence · 09/06/2021 15:58

I get audible, £10 a month, buy a book with a credit apparently.

Try and buy another one but I have no credit left.

And I can't for the bloody life of me figure out how to buy more credit.

Either way a book to listen to will cost more than the physical book itself.

I got a 6 month membership free with my phone contract and it was so confusing I didn’t renew when it ended.

StopSayingDueDiligence · 09/06/2021 17:03

How do I return the book? I can't see that option.

I bought a book and meant to buy a different, very similar one.

Apparently I click on the book and tap "return this title title.

Except I tap on the book and there no such option...

My DDs love audible, can anyone tell me if they have ever seen an audible player type thing - that links to audible but isn't a phone or an iPad?? They both like to listen before bed, but it means them having their iPads with them by their beds. Surely someone has made something that only plays audible books? Or am I dreaming?

TheDrsDocMartens · 09/06/2021 17:24

Mine use Alexas to play them

MistySkiesAfterRain · 09/06/2021 17:26
The Borrowbox app let's you borrow audiobooks for free from your library if you are a member. I think you go onto your library website first then log in from there.
And librivox has free public domain books. Read by volunteers. I gave a donation when I used it but you don't have to librivox.org/
I'd love to get into reading books aloud, thank you.

@WTFisNext It's because you're buying it via Apple - they're sneaky on charges and work at odds with Amazon (you can't buy books on the Kindle app on Apple devices, only download existing ones)

I'm on Apple and I only pay £7.99. I think it may be that the OP only signed up for a month, as it says it expires in July this year - if you choose the yearly 1 book subscription it's £7.99.

Incidentally, though you still can't buy Kindle books via an Apple app, you can now buy Audible books directly from the app..

Talipesmum · 09/06/2021 17:46

That’s weird. I would cancel that subscription and sign up again via the website. Then you can log into your new account on the app and it should be the right cost.

Or using your Amazon account or a diff email address you should be able to sign up to their typical free trial or something like that

There was only one option.
Subscribe and it costs £9.99 a month.
It didn't give me an option to buy a years worth, which would be nearing £100.

You have to set up an account first and then you will see all the options. To get the 7.99 go through the desktop site not an app.

and it worked. I returned it and got the book I was really after.

I love Audible. I listen via my Alexa Auto and it makes my 50 minute commute much more entertaining. I don't even feel it's 'cheating'.

I also use some books in my classroom - there are some good recordings of exam texts.

HeronLanyon · 09/06/2021 18:23

You can now (newly) spend credits through the app but not buy credits.
To do that I find any email from audible and get to my account that way. Buy 3 for 18.00. Or just go to the website where you can buy.

They have good sales. They email you about eg two for one offers and identify o any of them are in my wish list. Jut yesterday I bought two for 1 credit fro wish list.
They’ve also removed hood at refunding - once made error purchase and once the narrator mdr it unlistenable. No quibble.

HeronLanyon · 09/06/2021 18:24

Oops well done op 😃

FrumpyBetty · 09/06/2021 18:32

I can do all the above via the app.

How odd !

HeronLanyon · 09/06/2021 18:33

Oh frumpy buying credits also ??!! Will try. New ability o spend them through app is a relief.

Librariesmakeshhhhappen · 09/06/2021 18:38

@StopSayingDueDiligence

Yes, I am on the right thread. Audible is £7.99 a month for one credit, or you can pay more for 2 or 3 credits a month. Or buy a bunch at once.

You've subscribed through apple, so you're paying fees to them. Cancel it, go onto the audible website and subscribe directly through them. Its £7.99.

To return a book, you sign into audible, go to "my account", go to "purchase history", and then you see your list of purchased books and you can click "return book" there.

HeronLanyon · 09/06/2021 18:55

I am in The UK I cannot buy credits through the app. I can buy credit easily on the website or web app. Additionally having gone deep into audible help and customer service I can see there are potentially higher levels of membership which seem to be better value paying annually rather than monthly et cetera hope that’s available here in the UK I can see that there are different terms and conditionsIn e.g. Canada and the states.
There are also lots of free podcasts some of which are great and not available elsewhere.

FrumpyBetty · 09/06/2021 21:14

@HeronLanyon yep!

Have a look under you profile (bottom right).

HeronLanyon · 10/06/2021 00:51

frumpy I definitely cannot buy credits through the app. iPhone and standard membership here. Have never been able to. Simply no option. Not under profile or home or anywhere else. Help even says to buy go to the web site or web app which is exactly what I do !
Recent change to allow use of a credit through the app is great.

HeronLanyon · 10/06/2021 00:53

Ah i also have not merged my audible and Amazon account. Wonder if when you do things change.
Ho hum.

FrumpyBetty · 10/06/2021 08:00

@HeronLanyon

That's possibly why. I've never even been on the website.

OliviaBean · 10/06/2021 08:22

Hi there

I have Amazon Audible membership and I have realised I prefer to have a book in my hands. I am going to close my account but I have six credits to use.

I am happy to gift them to anyone who wants a book. If anyone wants a credit just PM me. I think you just have to give me the name of the book you want and your amazon email, I'm not entirely sure.

No catch, it would just be a shame to waste the credits.
