What age did you stop using a stroller with your child?

Mine is 2.5 years and I use a stroller quite often, I want to get a different one that's more compact for my car but wondering if it's worth it. Although I can't imagine stop using one anytime soon as my boy is quite lazy! But most say he's near the top weight bracket already!

Lots of people will be along in a sec to tell you that their child didn't go near a stroller after the age of 2. Wink

However, I used one occasionally with both of my DDs up to the age of 4.5 - we walk a lot, and don't always want to do that at pre-schooler pace. It didn't impact on their ability to walk well and long distances as they got older.

HermioneKipper · 09/06/2021 15:46

Stopped using it at 3ish. Although we did have a buggy board for our new babies’ pram instead so we may have used it slightly longer without this.

Feel your pain. My daughter was a right lazy one. Would your son use a scooter?

Fabuleuse · 09/06/2021 15:48

I'm one of the people who's along to tell you my child hasn't used one since 2.5. he genuinely hasn't though! If we wanted to go a long walk somewhere suitable for wheels he would go on his scooter or bike.

Can you get a stroller off one of the selling sites? You can normally get them quite cheap. You can always sell on again once you’re finished with it if still in ok condition. My daughter is nearly 3 and occasionally uses hers. It depends where we’re going.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 09/06/2021 15:49

my youngest is summer born so was only 4 and a bit when he started reception.
he was quite tired after school so I think we used it frequently up until the end of autumn term.

Stopped using it on a regular basis when he was about 4.5y.
but I kept it in the car for a while after that just in case.
and we needed last year for an A&E visit (he was 5.5), there's no way I could have carried him/held him while waiting.

I've had a lot of pushchairs over the years (7 kids), still have a Mothercare double (fat tyre type), single Mothercare with the attachable 1st stage car seat (also fat tyre) and the last Maclaren single stroller.
Won't have more kids so won't reasonably ever need them but I just can't bare to get rid of them!

30degreesandmeltinghere · 09/06/2021 15:49

Think on op. 30 degree weather is on it's way. Does carrying a dc +bag +dc essentials appeal?? Mine had a buggy for as long as possible!! I made an announcement to my older ones that once the youngest was out of his I was in no way becoming The Family Baggage Handler... Obviously he was allowed to walk if he chose but we still took the wheels with us! Ds was 4 in the September and our August trips we still took it!
No regrets!! I would rather see an over - sized dc in a buggy than hear one not in one and being dragged along tired and crabby!!

Thebookswereherfriends · 09/06/2021 15:51

We accidentally crushed it with the car when dd was 2 and didn’t bother buying another, but we did use one of those trikes with a handle for about a year.

JeanClaudeVanDammit · 09/06/2021 15:52

DD was 3 just before the last lockdown started and we haven’t used it since then. I am still tempted to get it back out of the garage sometimes when it takes her an age to walk somewhere and we have to stop to say hello to every cat and wheelie bin.

I’m not sure I’d bother buying a new one at 2.5 but would get a second hand one if you tend to walk more than drive.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 09/06/2021 15:53

whatever you do please don't buy one only to lose it within a week.
and certainly don't borrow one, leave it on the drive (because you had to run into the house to pee and forget to put it in the car) then run over it when reversing.

just don't 😁

CaptainSpirit · 09/06/2021 15:57

My eldest DD has just turned 4 two days ago and shes still occasionally in the buggy - we have a double that she shares with her 17 month old sister and it's just easier getting to preschool on time if I can bung her in and go!

I'm just going to keep her in and out of it until October (when our DD3 is born and will need the pram space instead) and then I'll probably buy a buggy board for DD1 to go on when she's tired.

Crowsaregreat · 09/06/2021 16:00

I don't know why people get worked up about it, strapping them in a pram is not that different to strapping them in a car, right? All depends on the kid and the distance.

DD we stopped at about 3.5, intended to stop earlier but we worked out we could plop her and DS in double buggy when he was a baby and have blissful times when they both nodded off.

DS is 2, we never go very far but I try to build his stamina a bit by making him do the regular trips we do like nursery run or going to nearby park.

LadyDanburysHat · 09/06/2021 16:00

With my eldest around 2.5, and he only used it occasionally from 2. The younger two, I needed to get to places quicker, so they were both in it until around 3. It really depends on whether you drive much or are always walking.

Deadleaf29 · 09/06/2021 16:04

Daily - around 3.
On big days out - 4.5
Occasionally useful for injuries/acting as a baggage trolley even now though, I’ve had a six year old in it perfectly fine (Bugaboo Bee). I wouldn’t have bothered with a new one beyond the age of two though, unless I planned more children.

Eachpeachpears · 09/06/2021 16:08

Ds is 2.5 and we stopped probably at 2yrs 2 months ish, however, we live very close to everywhere we tend to go, we've been in covid lockdowns so couldn't go far and DD was on the way and we couldn't afford a double so we kind of 'trained' him to walk further and for longer than the average child his age might walk

MeadowHay · 09/06/2021 16:13

My DC is about to turn 3 and we don't use ours very often anymore but that's because we recently bought a car. As we walk less to get to and from places now, we've used it a lot less. Ime people without cars tend to have their toddlers in buggies for longer/more often which makes sense. E.g. last week we used it once on a day trip for about 20 mins on our walk back from the beach to the car as she was shattered and she fell asleep straight away for a little power nap. I imagine we will continue using it for ages to come just on occasional times like that really.

HappyDaysToCome · 09/06/2021 16:16

We got rid of it when youngest started school, he’s summer born so he was just 4. He was very titchy with tiny legs (age 2 trousers when he started school!). I don’t think we used it a lot in the final year, but useful as back up.

Mind you I also had to carry him home from school a few times, just as well we didn’t have far to go!

I’d get a cheap or second hand one in your position.

BertieBotts · 09/06/2021 16:17

About 3 with DC1. DS2 is now 2.9 and I've just ditched it for nursery, we don't take it on big walks any more either. So maybe we are done?

RickJames · 09/06/2021 16:19

I think I kept a buggy until he was about 4 but from 3 it was much more fun to put him in a bike seat and zap about with him on the back of my bike.

DoucheCanoe · 09/06/2021 16:19

Ditched them for good around 4 years old for both DC.

We didn't drive and nursery was just over a mile each way so often used it on the way back and took it for long days out.

Caspianberg · 09/06/2021 16:21

I imagine we will still use one at 2.5. Maybe not every day or every journey, but handy if your out later at night and they are tired, when it’s super hot, if they nap still or if you go on holiday. Def for travel I think, I get knackered myself out of routine or on super early or late flights

yikesanotherbooboo · 09/06/2021 16:28

This is a lifestyle decision. When I lived in a city centre and was doing nursery run the n shopping then dropping things off for recycling my tired DC went in the buggy. Bike or scooter weren't appropriate. When I had a more car based life abd thus was mainly walking for leisure, dog walk etc I had the time and DC had the energy to walk a long way .

Waxonwaxoff0 · 09/06/2021 16:30

Until he left nursery, 4 years and 1 month old. I can't drive so we walk everywhere, nursery and the shops etc were a 30 minute walk away from where we lived. It was a bit too tiring for him sometimes. Plus the buggy was useful to carry my shopping!

shinynewapple21 · 09/06/2021 16:30

I most definitely still used a buggy at 3 years old - if only to put the shopping in!! We had a very lightweight folding one which we took on holiday still when DS had just turned 5, made things a lot easier . I don't suppose we used daily after around 3 but it was useful to still have for particular occasions . Just have one DC.

KurtWilde · 09/06/2021 16:31

On and off until they were about 4/5 especially on holiday or day trips.

MyDcAreMarvel · 09/06/2021 16:32

Two and a half and no I didn’t have a car with my first two children.
