What age did you stop using a stroller with your child?

Mine is 2.5 years and I use a stroller quite often, I want to get a different one that's more compact for my car but wondering if it's worth it. Although I can't imagine stop using one anytime soon as my boy is quite lazy! But most say he's near the top weight bracket already!

3.5 when the new baby arrived and I converted it back to newborn mode. We have a board and that gets daily use from the now 4YO. But we live in London and only use the car for long journeys.

Sideofnoreturn · 09/06/2021 19:11

We stopped using it when DS was 2.5 because DC2 came along, but he had a buggy board with a seat and uses it a lot still at 3 now. We’re in London and don’t have a car so walk a lot. Not sure i would buy something new for a 2.5 year old though - can you get one second hand or borrow a light umbrella type one?

LettyLoman · 09/06/2021 19:13

We moved house when Ds was 2 years and 5 months and we never unpacked it. So I’m that poster !! We use scooter or walking. Days out were planned so little legs had rest times

Ds is 4 in September but is really tall for his age so he does look a lot older. we don’t use it everyday but when/if we go on holiday this summer we will still take it with us, for if we have really long days out or if we’re going to walk all day. He’s too heavy for me to carry for more than a few minutes, and he can walk a good distance but I don’t think me and him should suffer when the buggy is a good option! I don’t care about other peoples judgy opinions, some people will judge no matter what you do!

mahrezzy · 09/06/2021 19:24

Haven’t used it since he was 30 months (he’s nearly 3 now). He can walk long distances and didn’t want to go in it.

speakout · 09/06/2021 19:24

Never used one.

Tinkling · 09/06/2021 19:26

My youngest was 4, I have a one mile walk to the school and she couldn’t walk 4 miles a day, so she was in one for half of the school run (final term, whole run before that) and then I sold it in the summer holidays before she started school.

weirdphobia · 09/06/2021 19:31

OP. A cautionary tale - I forced my DC1 to walk from the age of 3 because of comments on threads like this. We needed a new buggy and I was loathe to buy one at that age. No buggy was a nightmare. She hated walking so there was a lot of her sitting down on pavements and refusing to move.

DC2 is now three and I've got that lightweight buggy I should have bought for DC1. DC2 will use it until they don't want to any more. So glad IDGAF what others think about him being in the buggy at age 3 like I stupidly did with DC1. Buy the buggy if it will help your life.

Thanks for the replies
Not only the walking bit but I also find it necessary to strap him in when going to certain shops that don't have trolleys otherwise he just swipes everything off the shelves 🙈

About 4. We didn’t have a car so had to walk everywhere, and twins plus baby walking wasn’t really doable.

I had a single with buggy board and a sling for the baby if they were both too tired to walk.

I think if you have a car then it might not be worth getting one, but then you can pick up a basic one for about £30.

MummyCuddlesSolveEverything · 09/06/2021 20:26

About 3.5 for us he can walk further now (although sometimes he ends up on our shoulders), or we take his bike. We mainly stopped using it because he was getting too heavy for it and one of the wheels was starting to break and it wasn't worth getting a new one.

kowari · 09/06/2021 20:31

Used it between one and two. I found it a burden after that as I'd be left pushing a stroller while keeping up with a two year old who wasn't in it! I carried a backpack so didn't need it to transport anything else. Used the balance bike when I wanted a long fast paced walk.

EdHelpPls · 09/06/2021 20:35

As you've found, some shopping trips are easier with them contained! But also long day trips.

I'd hold on To the same one for the summer, assuming that you'll do most of your day trips etc then, and start to wean them off in the autumn. Don't worry too much about the weight limit unless the buggy warps with their weight. My 7 year old sat in ours sometimes (Maclaren and a baby jogger) for a rest.

Purplegrass572 · 09/06/2021 20:50

It’s definitely lifestyle dependent. The people I know whose dc stopped using the buggy at 2 drive everywhere. I like to walk everywhere. Sometimes at least 10k a day, I have twins so I’m not carrying them both when they get tired! If we’re going someone under a mile away then I’ll leave the buggy as they can manage that, slowly!

Dustyhedge · 09/06/2021 20:58

Depends on child and how much you need to walk really. My first never used it really past about 21/2. She used the buggy board about 3 times, fell off it and refused to get back on. I don’t think she was reliable walking to nursery until about 31/2 though so we did drive it especially on an evening. My youngest is just over 2 and is getting better at walking but I think we’ll need the buggy for a bit longer yet. We did a national trust trip last weekend and definitely needed the buggy. I wouldn’t want to go on a big day out without it until 3 probably.

I walked everywhere with my two year old. I often had a simple hip sling as a backup if we were out for the day, and he was on his bike if I just fancied a walk. Only one two year old though! How do you manage a buggy and twins if they want to walk?
TheSpanishApartment · 09/06/2021 21:30

I’m along to say mine wouldn’t go in one after 2.5. Absolutely refused. She was also lazy but preferred to be carried 😬.

Annietheacrobat · 09/06/2021 21:39

Youngest had just turned 4. We went to Disney in Florida and binned it upon our return. We weren't using it that much before but it was useful for the trip. She started school the following week and so was definitely time!

Purplegrass572 · 09/06/2021 22:49

@kowari they hold onto the buggy!! We go out on balance bikes often too without the buggy. If I didn’t have twins I’d probably have stopped using it earlier and had a sling or similar for long walks, that sounds ideal.

Missushbb · 09/06/2021 23:44

if you use it often just now, and you want one more compact i'd definitely get one. i sometimes put my 4 year old in the buggy if she's tired and i'm popping up to school to pick ds up.
i have a city mini which is really handy, also had a silver cross zest which was great, so handy and light, and easy umbrella fold

Immaback · 09/06/2021 23:50

Have a 4 yo and 2 yo and still use loads. Handy to throw bag/blanket into and they can hop in hop out any time. I’ve always had a good chuckle at the “refused the buggy at 18 months” camp as they must not be walking far Grin

Considerthis201 · 10/06/2021 00:03

I have 4 kids. The youngest was 18m but she hated her buggy since birth to my ds5 who needs aa buggy still full time.

AlwaysLatte · 10/06/2021 00:05

The last time we used one was when we were in London for the day. Our 6 year old was just as tired at the end of the day as the 4 year old and we were getting them to take turns even though the oldest had outgrown his ages ago. They were similar in their walking stamina so it seemed unfair to have it just for one of them.

EsmeeMerlin · 10/06/2021 00:05

My ds2 is still in his now at 3. We have taken him out a few times without it and he has got tired and wanted to be carried or started running off so the buggy is staying. Dh can easily carry him around but I can’t. He walks a lot alongside me and then gets in the buggy when he wants it.

I don't know why people assume that just because you are not using a stroller then you are not walking far. I used it between one and two where necessary but found it stressful trying to push a stroller while holding onto the hand of a toddler. It felt like a burden, I preferred a hip sling that folded up in my bag so I could have my hands free.
