I had enquired about buying a pup of a guy who was rehoming due to hi older dog not liking the pup

I had arranged for him to come to my home for a home check, he msg me saying wear a mask and have the money in an envelope

I said ok can you bring ID please he lost it saying I was being unreasonable and he had never heard of something do bizarre

I’m I wrong ? but I’m not handing money over to a guy at my door without proof of who he is

The dog could be ill and he could be scamming me

How did you find this pup? Are you sure he’s not a puppy farmer?

pumpkinpie01 · 09/06/2021 13:46

I would be more concerned about the puppies health and temperament than his ID to be honest.

cupsofcoffee · 09/06/2021 13:53

Why on earth are you buying a puppy off a stranger you met on the internet?

Strange request tbh. I foster puppies when they're between homes and have never had anyone ask for my ID when they collect one.

but this is a different scenario if i was getting a recue pup the the rescue would have trusted foster homes and i would not have to question that

Dont buy the pup off gumtree, dont let this stranger into your home to do a home check, what is he checking, is he a licensed breeder. .?have the money in an envelope, why, you haven't even seen the pup. Walk away. Get a dog from a rescue or a registered breeder.

CovidCorvid · 09/06/2021 14:02

Even if the puppy does have health problems and you see the sellers ID the dog won't come with a guarantee from this sort of seller.
You'd never get a refund or vets bills.

I bought a dog once from a KC registered, Crufts winning breeder who blocked my number and ignored my emails when I had problems within days with a puppy she sold me. Certainly don't expect any help fro ma Gumtree breeder.

CovidCorvid · 09/06/2021 14:03

There might not be a dog, he might just be stealing your money!

TheDogsMother · 09/06/2021 14:06

Please, please don't buy dogs off Gumtree. This just proliferates puppy farming and dog theft.

TheWomanInTheIronedMask · 09/06/2021 14:07

I genuinely cannot understand why people think it's acceptable to buy living animals from some random on Gumtree (although you say it's because you want to spend less Hmm)

It's so fucking irresponsible and stupid and God knows why it's still legal.

If you're here asking for advice - don't fucking do it and act like a responsible adult FFS.

Juneisjoyful · 09/06/2021 14:07

Can you Google his name? I once had a ddog I had been landed with (in the nicest way) and was trying to rehome. Found a suitable man I thought. Emailed several times, he asked the right questions imo. Googled him and he had charges of animal abuse against him!! Never again would I trust a complete stranger... Mn found me a reputable rescue for him. Don't buy the dpuppy op.

Mymapuddlington · 09/06/2021 14:07

I’ve had puppies from the internet and have never asked for id, mind you no-one has ever done a home check.
Usually they bring pup to me, we have a chat and I give them the money.
Or I go to them, have a chat and give them the money.

Do not buy this puppy.

Please don't be stupid. Walk away and save your money, time and heartache.

legotruck · 09/06/2021 14:09

Don't buy the dog. That's the most reasonable way to prevent being scammed. ID won't be much use if you end up with a sick dog and a huge vet bill.

Grossbuttrue · 09/06/2021 14:11

@KurtWilde @Mymapuddlington Do you even see the puppy interacting with its parents or at least it's mother before handing over money?

FilledSoda · 09/06/2021 14:13

Jesus , just cancel . This has disaster written all over it.
Try one of the dog rehoming charities .

Juneisjoyful · 09/06/2021 14:15

Did he say you would get the vaccination card and chip details?

Mymapuddlington · 09/06/2021 14:15

@grossbuttrue yes, there tends to be lots of videos/photos, visiting pup, lots of interaction before exchange of money. They ask about me and my family, I ask about pup and breeding situation etc

If I felt unsure or uncomfortable though I wouldn’t and I do report potential puppy farming etc

KurtWilde · 09/06/2021 14:17
**@KurtWilde* @Mymapuddlington* Do you even see the puppy interacting with its parents or at least it's mother before handing over money?
Of course!

NeilBuchananisBanksy · 09/06/2021 14:18

Most likely there is no dog. It's a common scam. Used to do it with deposits but I think gumtree have put a stop to that I think as they now hold the money.

cupsofcoffee · 09/06/2021 14:22

But that's nothing like the situation OP is describing. I wouldn't necessarily ask for ID if I'd seen the puppy with it's mum and siblings, had met it numerous times etc.

OP has no proof the puppy even exists - she's never even seen it before!

MadeForThis · 09/06/2021 14:25

Dog could be stolen.

Mymapuddlington · 09/06/2021 14:26

@cupsofcoffee I assumed she had seen puppy before and the guy was bringing the puppy and if her home is ok the puppy would be left with her?!

If some random is going to her house for a ‘home check’ without dropping pup off then run for the hills.
