I had enquired about buying a pup of a guy who was rehoming due to hi older dog not liking the pup

I had arranged for him to come to my home for a home check, he msg me saying wear a mask and have the money in an envelope

I said ok can you bring ID please he lost it saying I was being unreasonable and he had never heard of something do bizarre

I’m I wrong ? but I’m not handing money over to a guy at my door without proof of who he is

The dog could be ill and he could be scamming me

Hi everyone, thank you thus far for your comments I will take the negative with the nice. Also for info he refused to even meet me after I asked for ID so I'm not even getting the chance to see the pup never mind get it.

I just want to say that this was one pup it is not from the breeder but from another owner who had got it from a breeder a few weeks ago said his older dog wasn't getting on with the pup so needed to rehome it and yes i fell for it because it seemed ok.

My family have been wanting a dog for a few years and now as the children are all nearly adults I have the time for a dog, rescue centers are extremly difficult to get a young dog from and for personal reasons we want a dog that will grow with us not and older dog, and waiting lists for registered KC breeders is 2 or 3 years so I jumped at the chance to get the puppy I have wanted for a few years and yes it does seem foolish but I have tried many paths so it looks like I stay on the long waiting list or give up on the idea. I wasn't being cheap because actually proper breeders prices are £600-800 but puppy farmers and lockdown sellers are £2000 plus

OP there is nothing wrong with with buying a puppy rather then rescuing if that's what is right for your family. Rescue is not right for everyone.
But do it the right way, research and be prepared to wait.

I've recently brought home our puppy. Decision made August 2019. Found breeder I was happy with (in terms of license, health & genetic testing, environment raised in, experience, qualifications, existing owners of puppies reviews and interactions on group GB page, lifetime support, contract to return/rehome at any time if needed, member of an association with high breeding standards required) in February 2020 after a LOT of searching. Joined waitlist. So almost 2 years in all.
Totally worth the wait. Puppy farms wouldn't exist if everyone did this and rescues would be empty.

You're getting negative comments because buying a strange dog off a random bloke on the internet is not the way to get a well-rounded, happy family pet.

I bought my own dog from a breeder so I'm not remotely against people buying puppies, but we were on a waiting list for six months before we brought our pup home. Both his parents were health-tested, I have all the information for four generations of his family etc.

It's well worth the wait to get a puppy who is healthy, well-socialised and from a proper breeder who knows what they're doing. You had a lucky escape.

My money is on a three way bet

  1. It's stolen.
  1. He's being a bastard and selling the dog out of spite to hurt his ex/for drugs.
  1. They've just been to the vet and realised it's got huge and highly expensive veterinary needs so want to get some money out of their puppy farmed purchase.

Please do the right thing and report this person to Gumtree. If nothing else.

countrygirl99 · 09/06/2021 18:10

It's 11 weeks and he's had it for "ages weeks"? Huge red flag right there.

countrygirl99 · 09/06/2021 18:11

A few not ages

Honeycombskl · 09/06/2021 18:32

FFS don't get a dog off of gumtree! Anyone who has any actual love of dogs and their wellbeing (or at least enough to put dogs' wellbeing above their own desires) would not do this. No reputable breeder would charge £600-800 for a dog right now unless it was going to someone they knew, or who had been vouched for, not out of greed but because if the going rate for pups right now is £2000, if they sell them for £600 some scummy bloke will buy them and sell them on to make a profit. If this guy was selling his dog on after having it a few weeks, he would have got it around 8 weeks. No decent breeder would sell them at this stage, they tend to keep them at least 12. He is most likely a puppy farm seller, as are the vast majority selling on gumtree as decent breeders don't need to advertise on Facebook. You don't need proof of someone being a puppy farmer, just don't buy off f*ing Gumtree.

There are loads of young rescue dogs, I follow loads of rescues on Facebook and many are crying out for homes.

I would be more wary of puppy being stolen.

UhtredRagnarson · 09/06/2021 18:47

it was the first one that was not thousands of pounds.

Jesus fucking Christ.

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 09/06/2021 18:52

@chaos76

Thanks for that
But you clearly haven't taken it on board 🙄
chaos76 · 09/06/2021 19:24

I have been quoted £650 from a breeder so not wanting to pay more than that isn’t being cheap it’s realistic I am on a waiting list for a pup for 18 months now and will just wait, I came across this pup when looking for some planters so just thought oh look this pup needs a home nothing scummy about me or my intentions

If he was genuine he’d have to hand it back to the breeder, not flog it on to the highest bidder. It’s probably stolen. Please report him.
