asking for ID when buying a dog of a stranger

chaos76 · 09/06/2021 13:42

I had enquired about buying a pup of a guy who was rehoming due to hi older dog not liking the pup

I had arranged for him to come to my home for a home check, he msg me saying wear a mask and have the money in an envelope

I said ok can you bring ID please he lost it saying I was being unreasonable and he had never heard of something do bizarre

I’m I wrong ? but I’m not handing money over to a guy at my door without proof of who he is

The dog could be ill and he could be scamming me

I would be very cautious about this. You don't know enough about the pup, it's parents, their health checks etc
It could be stolen or from a puppy farm.
I can see why you are asking for ID, because you want to reduce the risk but I just think it all seems quite strange. There are so many scams these days.
How old is the pup?

CovidVaccinatorintheMaking · 09/06/2021 14:30

Do not invite a stranger into your home!

Do not buy a puppy off the internet from a random stranger.

Go to a rehoming centre or a registered breeder.

cupsofcoffee · 09/06/2021 14:35
@cupsofcoffee I assumed she had seen puppy before and the guy was bringing the puppy and if her home is ok the puppy would be left with her?!

If some random is going to her house for a ‘home check’ without dropping pup off then run for the hills.
It doesn't sound like to me?

The whole thing is full of red flags imo.

But what will an ID tell you?

FrenchieFromGrease · 09/06/2021 14:36

Why did you give your address to some random dude from Gumtree? There's probably no puppy and he's just going to rob you. If there is a puppy it will have been factory farmed or stolen. Now this dog stealing man is mad at you and knows where you live.

Honestly you are being really reckless here. How could you think any of this is OK?

Juneisjoyful · 09/06/2021 15:01

Tell him your dh is a policeman and he will be at home that day.

Crankley · 09/06/2021 15:19

It's been said a thousand times, do not buy an animal from Gumtree. Why would you even contemplate it? It could be from an horrendous puppy mill, or stolen or anything, you have no idea. If you can't find a puppy from a rescue centre then go to a registered breeder. Think of the animals' welfare, not your wants.

RoseAndRose · 09/06/2021 15:24

I think it's very likely that the puppy is a stolen pet.

Whose real ID will be discovered when the vet checks, if they read the microchip.

All dogs over 8 weeks must be chipped - has this seller said anything about chip re-registration?

chaos76 · 09/06/2021 15:38

@TheWomanInTheIronedMask

I genuinely cannot understand why people think it's acceptable to buy living animals from some random on Gumtree (although you say it's because you want to spend less Hmm)

It's so fucking irresponsible and stupid and God knows why it's still legal.

If you're here asking for advice - don't fucking do it and act like a responsible adult FFS.

Im not asking advice on where to get a dog or how to buy one im just asking was it unreasonable to ask for proof of ID

and if i was not being a responsible adult i would have taken the dog or paid someone else for a pup in the past year £2000 plus that some people are paying

Have you got a decent pic of the dpuppy? You could do a reverse image search. See if it comes up elsewhere or if it had a previous ad attached to it.

chaos76 · 09/06/2021 15:40

@Juneisjoyful

Can you Google his name? I once had a ddog I had been landed with (in the nicest way) and was trying to rehome. Found a suitable man I thought. Emailed several times, he asked the right questions imo. Googled him and he had charges of animal abuse against him!! Never again would I trust a complete stranger... Mn found me a reputable rescue for him. Don't buy the dpuppy op.
He wouldnt give me his full name when asked serval time which is why i asked for him to bring ID

If he wouldn't give you his full name, why on earth did you continue the conversation? And why tell him where you live?

Madness.

Panaesthesia · 09/06/2021 15:42

The man is selling you a puppy off Gumtree. Of course it's farmed. Of course it will probably have parvo.

What does 'some ID' matter? So what, you find out his name's Gary Evans, what does that change? You're still buying a sick dog, you're still putting money into the puppy farming industry. You're still the problem.

30degreesandmeltinghere · 09/06/2021 15:43

Well that in itself is dodgy.
Have you looked to see if he has other ads?

I would not buy this dog for multiple reasons.

But yes, were I reckless enough to buy a dog from an utter stranger - at my door - I would want to see his driving licence/some ID simply to make sure he hadn't stolen someone else's dog to sell.

Worst case scenario - I'd at least be able to identify the thief to the police when the vet told me that the dog had been stolen and was registered to someone else.

NeilBuchananisBanksy · 09/06/2021 15:52

Seriously op, I can't believe you thought this was a good idea?!

You need to report them to gumtree.

SoThisisMe · 09/06/2021 15:54

FFS.
How has all the press about sick puppies, scams and puppy farming over the last few years completely passed you by? The ID is not the issue although I don't think you are unreasonable to ask for it, but buying a puppy off a stranger you know nothing about is ridiculously stupid. You don't even seemed bothered that it's probably come from a puppy farm.

Either rescue properly, or wait and save up for a decently bred puppy from a good breeder. Or buy the pup Hmm but don't expect to have any comeback if it all goes tits up.

ViperAtTheGatesOfDawn · 09/06/2021 15:56

This sounds like it would be in breach of Lucy's Law. As he did not breed the puppy I believe that he is not legally allowed to sell it on. He should be returning it to the breeder.

ThisMarleyIsNotALabrador · 09/06/2021 15:59

You are buying a puppy from a stranger who won’t give you his name and he is bringing puppy to your home?

Walk away now! This has scam written all over it

GreyhoundG1rl · 09/06/2021 15:59

Buying a puppy on Gumtree Hmm. Ffs...

ViperAtTheGatesOfDawn · 09/06/2021 16:02

Choosing a puppy because it's the cheapest isn't a great start to a dog's life tbh.
