Do your kids use your iPad

I’ve just bought an iPad. First one, I have an iPhone though. Mainly for my 8 year old as his Amazon tablet is on its last legs and he’s outgrowing it. But he has real trouble regulating himself on games so I’ve made it clear it’s ‘my’ iPad and that I’ll be setting all the screen time limits. I pretty much have got it for him, but don’t want him to know that and also to justify the expense to myself I’ve convinced myself I’ll use it too. I’ll mainly use it for browsing the internet but occasionally need to fill in forms, type up long emails ect, things that will be easier on an iPad rather than phone (don’t have a laptop anymore)

Question is do you let your kids play on your iPad or is it a silly idea as it’ll be linked to all my apps and info? Will it also mean less options of parental control?
Is it better to set him his own iCloud account with all the parental controls or will that cause me issues when I want to use it as everything will be age restricted?
He really needs a lot of setting on his devices as he can’t manage his time at all, and has been known to go into my emails and stuff on my phone. Plus has some SEN.

Sorry not really an aibu but the things sitting here and I need to get it set up

I let my nearly 3yo play educational games on my iPad. You can set it up so you triple click the home button and it’s locked on the app you’ve chosen. So he can’t get into anything else!

I let my twelve year use mine. I hardly see it now.

Yes but really only supervised or very short unsupervised.
11 year old.
I have some educational apps like Doodle Maths and dragonbox that he plays as well as some more fun ones eg idle human that he's allowed to play after doing the maths.
It's definitely my iPad and the dc don't know the passcode.

I know he’ll use it a fair bit, probably daily but I generally limit to an hour on school days, more on weekends.
I worry if it’s my
iCloud account he’ll have access to all my stuff as it’ll mirror my phone.
But I worry if it’s his iCloud account I won’t be able to use it for anything useful.
I don’t think I’ll know until I set it up one way or another and see how it works

I’ve read about guided access but that won’t be suitable as he does like to flick between games.
I’ll use it next time he asks to play
On my phone though so he can’t read my emails again!

I wouldn’t let DC use my iPad. They could send a text to someone by accident. They could text my boss a picture I took of a zit on my butt cheek. They could delete important photos or emails. They could buy stuff on Amazon. Nope, I keep my iPad secure and I bought a second hand one for DC to use.

Blossomworld · 09/06/2021 07:47

Yeah this is my worry. But could I not lock those things when ds was on it? Or potentially delete apps like Amazon and stuff because I use my phone now anyway for all that stuff.
Maybe I should just set it up as his with his own iCloud account.

I was going to just buy a second hand one for him but after looking at all option it was better to just sep d a little more and get a brand new one. But that mean it’s mine. I’m not handing over a an expensive brand new iPad just for him to play Roblox! It’s not even xmas or birthday.

How easy is it to switch between iCloud account me?

My 2yo I sometimes let use mine on long car journeys- my 12yo is in the back with her to supervise. My 12yo has her own with strict parental controls on it so it's time limited and goes off at 10pm same as her phone. I wouldnt let her use mine unsupervised she's far too clever and nosy

Apple's design is that an ipad is used by one person. It's not designed to be logged into by multiple users. So I think you need to decide whose ipad it is and set up accordingly.

Frustratingly you do need another apple device to set up and manage a child's icloud account, you can't just do that via a website. You have your iPhone so can do that.

I've just set up my 9 year old's ipad by moving from my account to his.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 09/06/2021 08:00

Can you set separate user profiles on an iPad? I can't be more help than that as we're all android and windows here.

I gave my 6 year old son my old iphone (no sim) set up with his own iCloud account. I know all the passwords and he doesn’t so he can’t download anything with asking me first.
