Sweet chestnut?

HeronLanyon · 08/06/2021 17:59

That’s a beauty. Interestingly it is defeating my plant Id app which has come up with odd things when photo put in. App has always been spot on previously.

shewalkslikerihanna · 08/06/2021 18:27

Soup dragon
Yes we thought it was sweet chestnut also
Although the leaves on the photo are ever so slightly different
But such a beautiful tree I had to take a photo of it
Thank you

I don't think it's a sweet chestnut, but not sure what it is.

Magpiecomplex · 08/06/2021 18:32

Unusual sort of oak tree, I'd say.

Seeline · 08/06/2021 18:37

I'm going with turkey oak

FictionalCharacter · 08/06/2021 18:52

I think possibly turkey oak too visual-flora.org.uk/Fagaceae/Fagaceae.html#Quercus%20cerris
Deffo not sweet chestnut.
Can be a bit hard to tell by one leaf because they can vary. But the shape of the tree suggests turkey oak too.

Will0wtree · 08/06/2021 19:41

Do you know the name of the churchyard that it's in? It's such a stunning tree that maybe if you search on the churchyard then someone local might have written an article about the history of the church/churchyard that happens to also mention the tree and what type it is.

Turkey Oak

SoupDragon · 08/06/2021 21:17

As it is huge, have a look to see if it's here:

It’s the church of all saints helmsley
I think the map is great
I’m just rubbish at identifying where at is

This could well be the tree in the picture

@thesunshinesbright Ooh, yes, I think you've got it. I've never heard of it before, but what a stunning tree.

TheSunShinesBright · 08/06/2021 21:51

cateycloggs · 08/06/2021 22:49

I was going to suggest some kind of beech tree from the shape of the tree itself.

SummerWillow · 08/06/2021 22:59

My plant app says turkey oak.

Thecrisplover · 08/06/2021 23:21

I'd say a variety of oak. The shape of the tree and pattern/colour of leaf quercus family.

FraterculaArctica · 08/06/2021 23:28

Could it be a red oak?

mybrainhertz · 08/06/2021 23:38

Interesting. There's one of these trees in a park where I sometimes visit. I've been wondering what it is.

Seeline · 09/06/2021 07:38

I've never heard of a fern leaves beech - it looks beautiful!

The shape of the tree in the OPs picture definitely looks beech-like.

OP are you near the tree? Could you have a look around under the canopy and see if you can find any 'fruit' -acorns or beech masts etc - that should help solve the matter!

SoupDragon · 09/06/2021 07:59

The bark would help too.

HeronLanyon · 09/06/2021 08:25

It’s a beautiful tree what a shape! Some of the online images with multiple trunks are amazing. Never knowingly seen one - sure I have and not really looked at it. Now want a map of where the closest might be to me as I want to see in the flesh. A trip to Helmsley All Saints seems a bit far for me but the church looks really interesting also

HeronLanyon · 09/06/2021 08:56

Looks like a trip out Twickenham (Covid safe - can yo imagine in lockdown 1 if this was the reason for travel) is on the cards !
