Nightmares and talking about dying

My 5yo has started to get really upset about going to bed, asking why he always has nightmares and why can't I stop them Sad
This morning he came into my room and told me he didn't want me to die and burst into tears.

Is this a normal development phase and is there anything I can do to help him, aside from the talking about it, reassuring him etc?

I think 5 is when children do begin to understand mortality and the sheer enormity of it. So yes it is a normal part of development, but I know that does not really help when he is upset. I think you are doing all the right things, so just keep reassuring him. I remember the sheer terror, but my mum always made me feel better, so it is enough.
