Relationship red flags

disconnected101 · 06/06/2021 19:30

Inspired by the recent 'I knew my relationship was over when....' thread (link in first comment) I was hoping to put together a list of red - flag behaviours, words, traits etc. to look out for in potential partners, with the idea of having that resource to back up relationship talks with my kids (boy & girl) when they're older. They'll probably want to run a mile from such conversations but this is something I want to at least address with them. Y'know, be wary of someone who doesn't want you to hang out with your friends, don't get swept up by love bombing, that sort of thing. These are just two of the things I wish I'd been aware of before boarding the boyfriend train. If you were making such a list, what would you include?

People who name call their ex’s; particularly calling them a psycho.

People who will not enter into discussions about important things that will effect both of you eg finances. Everything has to be done their way because their way is the right way.

Beware of the partner who can't arrange dates, call restaurants, take the lead and make decisions. You will spend your life together with you carrying them.

Men who:

want to "wrap you up in cotton wool and protect you from the world"

try and control any aspect of you - your dress, your friends, your diet, what you drink

tell you that women don't X, Y or Z

tell you you're fat or make any negative or faux innocent comments about your body/appearance

don't introduce you to their friends

make negative comments to/about you in front of others

eye up other women when you're out in public

comment negatively on he appearance of women older than them/you in public spaces

men who are dismissive of you in any way

men who ask questions/begin conversations not in good faith - eg especially around 'weeks issues'

men who compare you looks wise to other women - favourably or otherwise

That'll probably do for now...

Ha! I thought 'mot weeks' was one of those stupid euphemisms like 'up on blocks'
