‘Do cats have any friends?’

Asks 5 year old dd. We have own cat she she’s worried he doesn’t have any cat friends (!) I told her he does but we don’t see them s they only meet in the fields

But it got me thinking, do cats socialize with other cats in the neighborhood at all? I have no idea where ours goes but I wondered if cats do socialize or if they just spend time outside alone?

We had one cat who would sit in the same garden as the cat we thought was her boyfriend.

The others have all been loners openly annoyed by literally everyone else.

One of our cats has a nemesis cat. The other one goes to his cat friend's house to eat play. Our human neighbour, who detests cats, opens his shed door when he sees them so that they can catch mice for him.

My cat and dog are friends - she greets him when she comes back in the house, they play together and have been known to hunt together. She also gives him the odd swipe if she is in the mood. So perhaps more like siblings than friends

There’s a herd of stray cats who always come to my house together for food. I’d like to think they’re mates and hang about all day getting into mischief.
Resident DCat will tolerate certain visitors to the garden but not others. He’s very snooty about who he chooses to be friends with

They're quite territorial so they don't tend to like other cats - even sometimes cats in the same home will just be tolerated rather than 'friends'. I think I'd tell your DD that they have loads though, and invite them round to your house when you're out and sit on the sofas and watch telly and eat dreamies.

We have two cats and they are friends with each other. They hate all the other neighbourhood cats.

Our cat used to socialize with stray cats that we used to feed outside our home.
Until one day they stopped coming...we fear the worst .

She also had a suitor, a very old black and white Maine Coone named Love -Chan and they would exchange excited sounds and lustful gazes trough glass as our cat is a strictly indoors cat. Unfortunately the potential lover disappeared and we think he has been hit by a car. She hasn’t had another suitor ever since as far as we know and now spends her days as a spinster.

My cat hates his life and everyone/thing in it. Apart from food. So food is his friend your DD sounds very kind,bless her x

Our cat is friends with next doors cat. She will go out first thing in the morning and bring him back with her, he's quite useful for her though as our house is within his territory so he does all the fighting with other cats and she'll just sit and watch from a distance.

I think they have friends, we had a cat that used to hang around for most of the day with next doors cat (they seemed to mainly spend their time catching mice together).

Yes. My cat Haribo has a friend called Hugo, they hang out together. Sadly Hugo will be moving soon.

I think most of them look down their tiny pink noses at other cats as much as humans to be honest.

Our neighbours' cats have been having pitched battles over the territory of our garden since we moved in (it was vacated by a woman with very large dogs). We assumed they hated each other, but gradually realised late at night the grey one and the black one sit on the porch grooming each other at about 1am!

I had a cat many years ago who used to have a fluffy lady visitor cat. They used to sit together on the bean bag and knead it.

My cat isn't really friendly with other cats, but he definitely tolerates some better than others. We have two neighbourhood cats who he allows to come in and take his leftover food. There are also two other cats who try to come in, but he screams and chases them out, all the way to the bottom of the garden.

My two cats are frenemies - fight on and off but often sleep curled up next to one another. Boy cat was rescued from a multi-cat household so he is very confident with other cats, but hides away from all but his own humans.

I always thought cats were solitary, until ours bought a feral friend home. We now have an extra cat, and the newcomer is besotted. He follows his mate around, miaows for him if he can't find him, and they spend a lot of time hanging out in the garden and playing. Oddly they are both male.

There's a cat that always comes round and sits in my garden meowing for my cats. I've seen the 3 of them together at times and it seems like my 2 leave it out. I think it just wants to be friends with them but they don't seem interested

My cat hates cats and only just about tolerates us as we feed her and let her sleep wherever she wants!

My beautiful cat died about 7 weeks ago but before that he would always go on adventures with my neighbour's cat. They were definitely friends! X
