I 'accidentally' changed departments at work...

A new department is opening at my workplace and it sounded really interesting. The senior manager sent an email asking for people who were interested and implied we would get shown around and a chance to spend a few hours in the department seeing what kind of work it does. I replied saying I was interested last week. Three days ago I got an email saying I've been accepted to transfer into the new department and I start next week!

Today was my last day in my current department. I feel really sad about it and feel like I had no sense of closure as it was all so sudden. I am happy about the move because I think the work will be a lot more rewarding but I will really miss my colleagues. I'm also nervous as it's a brand new department with a small number of staff and we will receive a lot of training before the department is expanded. I think it will be a great opportunity but I'm nervous.

I just feel really weird this evening, really unsettled and I just feel like it's very bittersweet.

It does sound a sudden way to be landed with a new job but it also sounds like you’re not against doing the new job. I always feel unsettled when I start a new job. The closest I’ve come to your situation is when I was working on a temporary contract, I applied for and got a new job, before I started the new job a role became available where I was working and I had an unsettled feeling about that, as if I somehow could have just stayed where I was it I’d waited. I loved my new place of work in the end.

My only advice is to accept that it will feel weird for a while and then one day you’ll suddenly realise you’re settled into the role and that you feel like you belong.
